Young Grasshopper,

The Shepherd regretfully has to inform you that your "Legend in Training" status has been revoked........

The Shepherd

I will be going for small trout and feel this rod will be perfect for that. I also shall be getting by years end a 5wt/6wt rod for the larger fish I shall pursue.

Welcome to the board.

My favorite rod is a 5 piece 5 wt, that casts like a dream.

Most of my rods are, however, 4 piece rods, and They travel well, cast well and the long ago problems with multiple ferrules are pretty much just that - long ago.

I agree with Ralph -if your local fly shop goes belly up, where will you go for the things you need today not in a week or so.

DUH! The same place he has been going, where he got the all so knowing info from you!

I have worked with a rod maker, Larry Lee, who can make you, or teach you how to make, a custom 4 peice Rainshadow rod fairly inexpensive. I have built 2 (gift) rods (with Larry's help) and had another made by Larry, all of which have been great performing rods.
Just go on the web and search for L3Rods ( http://www.l3rods.com/ )

Picked up my Redington 3wt Classic Trout today with Redington 3/4 Rise reel. Look wonderful and seem very well built. I am hoping this rod and reel serve me well. Had Nevada City Anglers load the reel with some good floating line and have it ready now to practice casting.

So, those imaginary trout will be biting real soon while I practice.

OK...Here is the deal. Most of these guys answering your question don't know crap.

Or maybe they do. OK....They do.

Here is my one cent worth.

Unless you are going for really big fish. Your reel just holds line. With big fish it does more than that so you need a beefy drag. If not, don't waste your money on a fancy reel. Spend it on a good rod ($100-$300) and good line ($60-$100).

Spend more and its mostly about artsy fartsy.

Those are the parts that do the heavy lifting.

Welcome to the board and have a blast!

Why wait until next year? I think your local club has an outing planned for the lower Yuba in early December. There's a ton of knowledge that can be gleaned from those folks...........

I went to the November club meeting this last week. Enjoyed that. Waiting until next year because this is my super busy season for work as I support retail stores POS systems so I am on call 24/7 and during holidays, I am always on the run. So, no time to fish or do much anything fun. 8-(

For now, I will read, practice casting, and get ready for classes at Nevada City Anglers early next year to learn some basics.

Young Weedhopper,

Keep the flock apprised of your equipment status. When and IF you get a 6wt, the Shepherd will consider reinstating your "Legend in Training" status.
