Re:The Hand of God, and Bamboo Rods 16 Years, 8 Months ago
You betcha I've thought about that. I can't wait to hold my own bamboo rod in my hand, slow down my cast and land a trout with a rod as bent as a rainbow.

I fear no danger because, living in the freaking desert, it won't do me any good to have a collection of cane poles and no money to reach the fishing hole!

Then, there's the danger in Baja. I'll be there next week. What if I fall for those fast-as-a-genie (as they say in the Middle East) fish, that can rip out 150 yards of line in under 10 seconds?

Danger? Bring it on!

OT, nice looking photo of the coho buck with that Powell rod on the Clarks site. The photo here does not do it justice.

What kinda fisherman do you think I am? 16 Years, 8 Months ago
I wouldn't even consider bamboo and jigs. It would be like sardines and chocolate.

Now, plastic beads...

They're just fishing rods, not the Holy Grail! 16 Years, 8 Months ago
If I wanted to, I wouldn't have a second thought about putting a spinning or centerpin reel on a bamboo fly rod and fish jigs or lures or whatever. I've never done so, but if I thought I might enjoy fishing that way I would give it a try.

You're right that bamboo isn't the fly fishing Holy Grail...steelhead are, and anyone who disagrees with that is a bait-slinging, treble snagging, catfish loving, low life who probably engages in incest...or not.

Bruce I wouldn't normally reply like this. Since it seems Uncle Jack has left this forum I feel compelled to fill in.

Dale, I AM surprised!

Well, I did say, "or not" to cover my butt if I was wrong, HOWEVER, for years I've been saying that Oroville is populated by inbreeders. Hmmmmmm

And, I miss Uncle Jack. What a fun persona.

Baaaaaarucie,

Take the Shepherd's excellent advice on this one. If you absolutely, positively feel you must fish with a wooden rod save yourself a ton of cash and do the following:

1- Run down to your local Lowe's or Home Depot and buy a broom handle for a push broom and a roll of duct tape.

2- Affix 5 rod guides of appropriate size and one of your overpriced Abel reels to aforementioned broom handle with the duct tape.

3- Enjoy.

The Shepherd

PS- After spending several hours watching you (attempt) to cast, the setup above could potentially improve your on stream performance.........

Barbarian! Go back to tearing the heads off of dolls, slowly boiling frogs on your stove, slaughtering innocents, raping their cattle...

Do not crawl out of your hole to address those who are truly enlightened. You are not worthy, Shep...or is it Curly?

Bruce,

If you are going to get a bamboo rod, go the extra mile and get one you are proud of. I was in the same state you are in now. I looked at a lot of rods and rod makers before I found Larry at High Sierra rods in Angels Camp. We went over tapers (he has a huge database of tapers) and I had him custom make a rod for me. I felt the price was very good and the quality was excellent. I love this rod and i took it over the whole John Muir trail last year. I just returned from a trans- Golden trout wilderness hike, where i caught all three species of goldens. It all is so much better with this rod!

I don't think i would feel the same about the rod had I not spent the time and cash to get such a great rod. Take your time and get a good one. Those chinese made rods and just a gateway and will only take up space in your closet once you know the real quality of some of the local rod makers.

Thanks for your input, Greg. The first rod will be Chinese. I'm committed. Depending on the quality of the blank (Buzz from this board is going to put it together for me) I'll either be able to report that the Chinese have improved on their quality from what they were 4 years ago OR I'll not go that route again.

As a matter of fact, I might go to a totally-built USA rod the next time, anyhow. There are many variables I'll have to consider.
