The Hand of God, and Bamboo Rods 16 Years, 8 Months ago
|
|

I've wanted a bamboo rod ever since I learned what the hell they were, but when I saw the price tags I decided I'd wait...a LONG time.
The other day I received a brochure touting a line of cane rods made by The Headwaters Bamboo Co. They have 3 models, from $330 - $770, AND they're offering a 20% discount if ordered before 7/1.
Also, you can play with the rod for a month and get your money back if you don't like it.
That evening I picked up the copy of John Gierach's book, "Trout Bum" that I'd been reading, and the next chapter was entitled, "Cane Rods". Hey, I know divine intervention when I see it.
With a little delving, I discovered that the Headwater rods are started in China and finished in the good old USA. Two years ago there were some aesthetic problems, and they lacked consistancy, but apparently they've been learning.
I can't find any recent info on these rods. Anyone out there know anything about their quality now or have any suggestions for an entry-level cane rod? I'm thinking about a 4/5 wt. for San Juan River 'bows.

No, no, no.
Please do not purchase a bamboo fly rod, they're just no damn good I tell ya'.
Trust me, do not venture down this path.

"Each night as I haul myself onto the back of county garbage truck no. 2, there is a familiar wind, some thread of moonglow or starlight, a splatter of dark rain on my skin, something that stirs my memory, and again, if even for a brief moment, I am on some mountain river, some stretch of bright water, full of possibilities, including the possibility of trout, perhaps one that, when hooked, will haul me in and out of time, in and out of life's mysterious and frightening, wondrous and incomprehensible continuum, even to the edges of the universe." -- Harry Middleton

Yeah, but what about my immortal soul? Can I say "no" to The Lord.
Too late, anyhow. Buzz and I have been talking about him making me a rod from one of the nice blanks he has access to.
I can't wait to land a 40# Dorado on a 5 wt. bamboo!

Oldtrout,
Spoken by the guy I watched land a nice steelhead on the Trinity with a bamboo rod, and when confronted with a comment I made that I would never risk such a classic bamboo rod like that out on the river and risk breaking, you calmly said, "they are meant to be fished!"

I thought your post might be a troll about throwing money away on a "made in China" rod when there are now a gazillion American rod makers from whom you could purchase a rod for just a little more money.
I was wrong.
This Buzz guy must really hate you. (Don't asked, you'll know soon enough).

That would be like having a classic car and keeping it in your garage all the time.
Besides, bamboo can be repaired, right?

Bruce,
A 40 pound Dorado on a 5 weight rod? If I was you, I'd target Tarpon with one. But for God's sake, please don't fish Jigs with a bamboo rod.

No harm done. I figured that for my first foray into bamboo, I'd better not spend too much. Apparently, the quality of Chinese rods varies quite a bit. Remember Japanese radios in the '60s. When did they get good? It's like one day I woke up, and "Made in Japan" wasn't a funny joke anymore.
If I like bamboo, I'll probably get something different for the next one.

If you only "like" bamboo there will always be a next one no matter how many bamboo rods you acquire. And, of course, it will be something different, always, something different... hexes, pentas, quads, hollowbuilt...
Have you even considered the consequences if you should more than just "like" the rod from Buzz?
Danger Will Robinson, danger...
