The Northern California Fly Fishing Board

Heading up to the Bend Oregon area the end of June. Never fished there... any suggestions on where and what would be appreciated. Not asking for the secret hole... just point me in the right direction

You have so many choices it's unbelieveable. There are lakes up there with real trophy fishing, Craine Prairie being one of the best and easily fishable with a kick boat. Fall River is tough but really good too. The Matolious is a great stream to hit. Hosmer Lake for Landlocks and Big Brookies. That area also holds the start of the Deschutes River. East Lake can be great. There are so many choices you will really have to hit one of the several good fly shops in Bend to find out what's happening. Have a blast up there.

Stop by The Hook Fly Shop in Sunriver, Oregon, just south of Bend. They are experts on the area and can offer lot's of alternatives. You can also get the book Fly Fishing Central Oregon....it contains a very good overview of the many waters up there. May see you there. My wife and I are looking at homes in the area for retirement in the not too distant future and I think we may be up there in later June. BTW, GREAT time to be there. Charlie mentions East Lake. Usually that fishery can be very good at that time of year. Often will find Kokanee in the shallows. They can be a hoot on a fly rod. Good luck and post a report upon your return.

Charlie beat me to it. Haven't tried the Metolius yet--that's on my to-do list. The Fall is a difficult river to fish. You might add the Crooked River to the list for an easier experience--it's east of Bend. Any fly shop there, and there are several, will provide good info.

If you're thinking of camping, try the yurts at the LaPine State Park.

El Ray: Crooked River had a fish die off and hasn't recovered to its former fame yet.

All of the above...but don't over look the Upper Sac or the Williamson on the drive up or the drive back.

So much water so little time - have a great time.

Wow thanks for all the good info... now i wish i had more time... My friend and I are going for 5 days, will post a report and pics when i get back.

Met is a great river about 45 mins from bend. I'd post some pics but I only get half the image tab to show. Beautiful river with some hog bulls....be a good time for that place too, but might want to save it for a weekday.

The Metolius and Deschutes are a must. If you can make up around Maupin (above or below) the fishing should be great. A closer section on the Deschutes to Bend is South Junction, look on a map for access, great place to fish the D. Another must in Bend is Deschutes Brewing, if you like beer.

Hook fly shop in Sunriver know the area totally. Good folks. Their website:
www.hookfish.com. Great area. Hosmer is one of THE most scenic lakes to float tube in the country. East Lake is very worth doing also. You'll love it all.

I agree Betty Hosmer is special. If you enjoy sight fishing for big fish it's hard to beat. And even if you don't with Mt Bachelor in the back ground and the almost gin clear water the setting is nothing short of enchanting. I spent quite a bit of time on Hosmer going after those big, beautiful brookies - I can't think of a better way to spend the day. There is a nice campground there and they used to have canoe rentals as well - no motors allowed on the lake.
