Cooking trout while backpacking 18 Years ago
Anyone have any good recipes/techniques for cooking up some brookies? We'll be in desolation for 5 days next week and figured we supplement out freeze dried food with some stunted brook trout. No fires, so they have to be cooked over a camp stove. Don't want to carry a lot of perishable foods, but willing to bring a couple things to make the fish tasty. Any ideas?

Brookies to me, are the best tasting of all the trout save, maybe steelhead. All I've ever done on pack trips was cook them in a tiny amount of oil (or whatever fat available) with salt and pepper. I don't think they need anything else.

Ditto on Hucks comments. However, I usually carry a small shaker bottle with an onion power, garlic salt, herb blend. I know it's kinda heavy but throwing some slices onions in there a few minutes before they're done, changes the whole experience.

Ditto on Stonefly and Huck but I also like to squeeze a fresh orange over the fish just, and I mean just before removing from fire. Then you can eat the orange pulp for the fiber.

Yeah. I think if I was going to do something different without adding weight, I'd take along a little dried dill, maybe garlic salt and/ot lemon pepper. Then, I'd wrap in foil and put that in the pan. With steelhead at least, it comes out more poached (moist)that way. It's hard to beat fried brookie with salt (garlic?) and pepper though...
Different strokes......
I even cooked some goldens once in linguica grease. It was bulk but I wouldn't recommend it......
