Re:winston dl4 17 Years, 6 Months ago
like any rod - CAST IT FIRST - especially this one.
i am a HUGE winston fan, own way too many of them for my own good - but never liked the DL4 series.
it was discontinued fairly quick after hitting the market. i think it was an early winston attempt to put a little power in the butt, but still retain a soft tip to protect fine tippet - someone once told me it was an attempt to get a bamboo feel from a graphite rod? i test cast one a few times when it first came out, and my experience with it was that is was too stiff on bottom and WAY too soft on top - not much feel - and again, I LOVE winston's. of course that's my subjective experience, if you can, go cast it a bit. $225 is a fair price if you love it, but it's a waste of money if you don't.

From what I take from yuor reply is this rod would be better for bigger dry flys.

Re:winston dl4 17 Years, 6 Months ago
i think it's definitely a dry fly rod - one that demands a very slow, "bambooesque" casting stroke - it will collapse if you try to cast it like today's faster rods. and not ideal for casting a lot of weight, indicators, 2-fly rigs. etc. do some searching around the web, you'll see this series is pretty hard to find, has a bit of a cult following, and is either loved or hated - apparently still being sold in japan? ask you friend if you can borrow it and make some casts - think about how you'll be using it, then decide - like i said, if you like it, plan on using it primarily for dry fly fishing the price is good. btw you neglected to mention the length and line weight..

I've got one and I love it, but it did take some getting used to. Before I figured it out, I had buyers remorse pretty bad. I have a 4 wt 8ft and I use this one a lot in the high sierras. It is perfect for those conditions. What weight and size is the rod you're looking at?

You should get it. Be prepared to need some time to get used to it. I had a few ah ha moments after using it a number of times. Stiff butt, but loads slow. It still casts well in the wind. This is not a big river rod, such as the L. Sac. It's best for smaller moving water, like the Merced, Walker, Carson, Owens...

If you don't want it, I have a friend who drools over mine, who would love the rod. Let me know and I'll put your friend in touch with mine.
