funny thing is he has slammed 'em on a dries, but Dusty is not about to say it so I will! you guys crack me up! Its like fly fishing is some secret society to some of you!! Dusty is the one of the most steelhead catching son of bitches I have ever met! Being in high school allows him to spend many of days chasing them on various norcal rivers. It is interesting that you assumed he hadn't though? If you read his post he is just trying to eliminate the myth that you have to fit all these parameters to be a steelheader: ie purism or elitism. plus I thought you had to catch them on a magnet to be a true steelheader!!

troutnut wrote : you have to use a 3wt. HELIOS spey rod AND a dry fly to be a REAL STEELHEADER
Real Steelheaders must ALWAYS cast at least 110 feet, anything less means they need to head back to the casting pool and redeem their soul.
you crack me Brian!! You just don't quit do you! your poorly tied flies to entise me to bite aren't going to work I am wise to you and everyone else here is too!! By the way you never came by and saw me in Pleasonton!!

oh I have no doubt! And I bet I know the whereabout as well
But see... you're not here every day trying to keep some false secret and brag over some overfished stream.
You go and catch'em! You're taking care of business brother.

Don't forget the weather factor... 17 Years, 6 Months ago

Real steelheaders wade in water below 40 degrees, fish in freezing rain and snow storms, don't get out of the stream until their toes are numb and cast until their arms are ready to fall off.
A real steelheader will forfeit a higher body count for the art of the swing, the potential for the big grab. Dry flies don't HAVE to enter into the equation, but they elevate the real steelheader to real steelheader first class.
For the record, I'm still a real steelheader wannabe. Although I've caught fish using all the tactics mentioned, I'm still into the body count thing and usually reach for those bobicators. Only on occasion, will I try something a bit different, just for the challenge.

A steelhead fly fisherman needs two qualities:
A strong casting arm and a room temperature IQ.

webster's dictionary:
secret fly fisher code language
example: sdfsfe sddfvf dfdf dfsasds sadfvbgbn fgzgb gbssgbg ssdv223!
roughly decoded: dry fly
Characteristics: native fly fisher language regularly involves over complicating things with rules, opinions, and the rare hint of ego!

Says who, you?
A real steelheader will forfeit a higher body count for the art of the swing, the potential for the big grab. Dry flies don't HAVE to enter into the equation, but they elevate the real steelheader to real steelheader first class.
Again, says who?
For the record, I'm still a real steelheader wannabe.
This may be the only thing you have ever said that has any merit.
Although I've caught fish using all the tactics mentioned,
Really?
I'm still into the body count thing
Figures...

Again, figures....
