After not fishing for WAY to long, I finally got a week away to wet a line.
I started out at a well known lake near the north entrance to a national park. It was really windy and the catching was pretty slow. I did manage a few, but it was not on fire, by any means. Perhaps a bit too early for the calibaetis. Here's one I did manage to catch on a red copper john.
After having to deal with other people's incessant generators, $18 for a crummy campsite and slow fishing, I decided to pack it in. I took a drive and headed north. I ended up at a small stream out in the middle of nowhere so I could catch one small fish. Why? Because it's the final one I need to finish my DFG Heritage Trout Challenge. I've had so much fun going the challenge, I decided to try and catch the other five heritage trout in the coming years/months. Here's the bitty fish I caught for number six:
I was in the mood for some bigger fish, so I went to a well-known local river for three days. The scenery was beautiful (it always is here) and the fishing was good...in the evening at least. The nymphing during the day was S L O W but it made up for it with a golden stone hatch each evening, along with a few green drakes. Big bushy flies and actively rising fish...my find of angling!
I left after a few days to try out some new water and ended up at this lake:
It was 1:00 in the afternoon, but fish were rising all over the place to midges and ants. I caught a bunch of rainbows and one of these. Anyone know what the heck this is? (actually I know, but I'm wondering if you folks do).
I enjoyed the scenery, of course this well known geographic feature dominates the "skyline" of the State of Jefferson.
The sunset that evening was nice as well. This was the view from my campsite.
The next day I went to another lake that looked a whole lot like the other one, but it was further west and a lot further north. Again, rising planters to midges, I got a few, but I had more fun visiting with a friend of mine that lives in the area and I haven't seen for a few years.
Summer's just starting and a load of other fishing trips are planned, so I'll post more later. Enjoy.
Cheers!
