Bjorn I was fishing San Diego back on May 19-21. We caught bass, bonita, bonefish, and I dropped a nice corbina. We wade fished for a variety of bass and the corbina. Boated for bass, bonita, and bonefish. Excellent action. Right now barracuda are also going on big time.
Cheers, Ken
PS: If you want a guide I suggest getting in touch with Peter Piconi or Scott Leon.

You can rent sit on top sea kayaks for about $40 - $50 a day. There are several places, lots near La Jolla. I've been looking into that too. My mom moved there a few years ago, and I need something to do down there.

Everything that is right about the NCFFB 17 Years, 10 Months ago
Thanks all... I really appreciate all the ideas. This is what is great about the NCFFB. I've gotten a lot of good advice on this thread. Now I'm thinking of a "Dirtbag Bonefish Trip" next spring and I'm thinking of how I can get down to San Diego for a couple of days...

Love it. Thanks guys.

I would E-mail Brian Okeefe the photographer and ask him if he could reccommend some places to go. He is kind of known in the industry for his DIY bonfishing trips. Several years ago he did a slideshow about a diy trip to tthe Bahamas where they camped and sea kayaked.

If you go down to San Diego before Christmas and figure out where to go, flies, presentation, etc., post it up and let me know. When I go down to mom's at Christmas this year, I have already warned her I am going fishing SEVERAL days while I'm there. I've painted her house, fixed all the lights, irrigation system, garage door, built storage cabinets, ... this year is going to be a vacation or I'm staying home and working on my own place. I've spent more time in Home Depot down there than any other business, there is RUMORED to be great saltwater tackle shops in La Jolla and San Diego, I've never seen them.

I'll post up as much as I can find out when I get back for your spring trip. I've already done a bunch of online research, Mission Bay, San Diego Bay, La Jolla, Dana Point, Del Mar, San Juan Capistrano are all good places to fish down there. Even Newport Harbor has fish that hammer flies. I'm going to get that place dialed in, as long as I am guilted into coming down at Christmas.

Besides, you have wife and kids right, you can score BIG brownie points making the side trip to San Diego Zoo, Wild Animal Park and Sea World.

PS. Southwest flies Sacto to San Diego for ~$150RT.

In Solana Beach...... 17 Years, 10 Months ago
There's a place called Bluewater Tackle. Last time I was there, they had taken over San Diego Fly Fishing and had a separate fly fishing store, just adjacent to their conventional tackle shop. I've done a few limited charter tuna trips with them (coventional gear), and at one time, they were doing overnight offshore charter trips specifically for fly anglers. They were also doing guided fly fishing trips in Mission bay and off the North San Diego kelp beds.

They're located at Lomas Santa Fe and PCH, just a mile or so north of the Del Mar racetrack.

Hey Bjorn,
Ken's suggestion was a great one for a lower budget trip.
You'd have a fun time with either of those guides. Haven't used them myself but heard good things from folks that have.
You can also chase makos with Conway Bowman or Dave Trimble through Bowman Bluewater down there.
Definitely a unique experience in itself.
I've been thinking of something similar as our son is 18 months and I want to take him to SeaWorld.
I'll hopefully get a chance to go look for spotfin croaker in the early AM.

If you happen to be driving down to SD, there are plenty of beaches to hit along the way from SB on south for corbina.
Corbina season is just starting to kick off in full swing down here. They're not easy, but it is sight fishing for decent sized fish.
Plenty of beaches in SD to chase these guys and spotfin croaker as well.
Here's a nice clean fish from yesterday's lunch break.
Granted, this is a pretty big model for these guys, but they all put up a fun fight on light tackle.
