Yosemite spots 14 Years, 10 Months ago
Hello all
Takin the gf (read girlfriend) up to yosemite in a week, have not fished up there in a good long while, last time was exploring Saddlebag lakes for goldens, would anyone be so kind as to share a couple of river spots, just got this new bamboo that I'd like to put through the paces and see what all the fuss is about ! Cheers and tight lines!

From Tuolomne Meadows try fishing up either branch of the river. The Dana Fork is close to the road, but the Lyell Fork is often the better choice for wild and willing little rainbows, some even 8" to 10" or bigger if you're lucky. It's an easy walk along a heavily traveled trail, but very few fly fishers. A 3wgt or 4wgt is all you'll need along with the usual flies--they take dries with gusto. This year there's still probably plenty of water. Don't know about downstream from the Meadows--haven't tried it.

Hope this helps.

De nada. Hace muchos años que he pescado esos ríos, pero creo que quedan lo mismo y el paisaje es magnífico. El único diferencia es que hay mas gente. Disfrútese si decida a visitar esa lugar.

You're the first person on this Board who's picked up that I might speak Spanish. My handle "El Rey" was my nickname when I was in the Peace Corps in Colombia in the 60's--my last name is King. I still try to keep up my conversational skills. Thanks for testing me.

Cheers,
El Rey

Peace Corps in Columbia eh, sounds very interesting, but boy sounds like a dangerous place with all of the kidnapping that goes on as of late. My Spanish is actually pretty limited but it got me by for our surfing road trips to cabo San Lucas, now I use an iphone translator program that let's you cut and paste whole sections of text to translate between a multitude of languages. So back to the fishing, I was looking on one of the Internet site and a guide named Tim Hutchinson came up and there was some mention of fishing an area below the gorge on the Merced that fishes well during these later year low flow periods. Hey have you been out lately? Thanks
Mike

I'm afraid I've exhausted my knowledge of Yosemite fishing. Trips to the Valley have usually been sight-seeing and hiking with family--no fishing. My trips to Tuolomne Meadows were a long time ago.

If you have access to old issues of California Fly Fisher mag, there have been a few articles about Yosemite fishing. You'll need to do some research.

And Colombia was quite safe in the 60's, except for a few Che Guevarra wannabes in isolated areas.

Cheers

We went up to Tuolumne Meadows earlier last month. Lots of water and mosquitos then. Dana and Lyle Fork are good recommendations. Try to hike in further before tossing flies at the Lyle Fork fish. Gin clear water makes the fish very spooky. Or fish the Tuolumne on the western side of the meadow for your best results or down past Soda Springs. We hiked down to Waterwheel falls when the trails were flooded from runoff and before the high sierra camps were open because of snow. Our day in was met with quite a few packers as they were just setting up Glen Aulen. Check your email for a few other suggestions.
