Fished the E. Carson the last couple of days. Flows are good and so is the fishing. The water warmed up very quickly and it was very hot both days. Unlike myself, I would recommend getting on the water early. Aside from a few caddis, there is not much hatching. The fish are looking up and seemed pretty willing to take an E/C caddis or attractor dry in the evening. Biggest fish (caught by a buddy) went 22" and was caught on of all things a royal wolf.

McCloud River Rainbows. Spent some time in the Peruvian Andes looking for our local fish. Great adventure, but no luck. Learned a lot, including that it's a pretty bad idea to take a public bus from Canete (sea level) to Huancaya (elevation 12k feet).

Been a while since I have fished alpine lakes in the Sierra and I don't want to show up to a lake that is now devoid of fish due to frog protection. Looking for a trailhead within 2.5 hours of Sacramento. Would like to keep the hike in to under 10 miles. Anyone have a suggestion?

Nice to hear about the E.C. Where did you access it? F.R.? A.P. trail? The bridge? I plan on being there myself soon, at the end of a backpack trip of my own, but from a trailhead that is a helluva lot further away than 2.5 hours from Sac (but not as far as Peru).

If that's your time frame, you might consider the lake we went to one fall, many moons ago, with a view like this:

I was there last summer and I can attest that there are still some very nice trout swimming in its waters.

Accessed at AT. Don't have the vehicle for the FR. Lots of fish were caught in the hole where they always rise. Didn't get past the big bend as I jacked my knee. Wish I could have fished below the FR. Doesn't look like many people have been down in the canyon yet and a cooler day could be great.

Thinking of Emigrant wilderness with a goal of reaching Emigrant lake. I know the fish pop is self sustaining and there are some big fish in there.

Trying to remember where you took that pic. Were there silver phase goldens caught before we froze? If so and you found a good population, I think I just may head back there.
