Small stream website, fishing reports, etc. 15 Years, 1 Month ago

Met up with a few friends at Kelsey Bass Ranch the other day. The first half of the day was great. We were all worn out by 7:00 pm. I was able to get a day and a half in on the Lower Merced below McSwain reservoir. If you're in the area its worth your time. I caught rainbows up to 16" on dries and nymphs. Stop by the fly shop in Modesto if you go. One other thing, I stumbled onto a great website for small stream fishing. sierratroutmasters.com has great information about small streams along Hwy 50 east of Sacramento.

Hey Mike,
Is Kelsey still in pre spawn or have the fish dispersed to deeper water? I like targeting sighted fish in the shallows, then follow the weeds beds for action at Kesley. A buddy of mine targets around adult dragon fly activity during the egg drop. Its amazing to watch bass follow their flight. Is there any weed growth just past the dam in the flats area this year or is it pretty barren?
Thanks in advance.

The water temps I saw Thursday ranged from 64 in the morning close to the dam, to 71 in the afternoon at the south side of the lake. We saw fish on beds and a few schools of bass fry. So the lake is in spawn to early post spawn mode. I saw only a few damsels. We had very little surface action. That should change any day now. Not much in the way of weedbeds yet. Mike
