This is looks like an overreaction to a decision Obama made last week to support an international ban on bluefin tuna. ESPN seems to be the only news org reporting it as a plot to end sport fishing. Notice that it's in the outdoor saltwater section of the ESPN site. It will be interesting to see in the next few days how others respond to this guys angle.

Not a hoax Shawn. Here's the actual document. Although vague, it is the first step in what I believe will be a long assault on not only fishing of all kinds but also hunting.

Hey Charlie, your link didn't show up. A couple of thoughts though. Why hasn't the media reported any of this? Fox news hasn't even reported it. ESPN hasn't even mentioned it on their station. There's just this one guy that writes some obscure column that's buried way in the back of the fishing section of the ESPN website. How will the government police this fishing ban I wonder? They only have 100 or so F&G wardens in California and can't even enforce any of the fishing regs, how will they keep millions of people from fishing? Do you really think that there is a conspiracy to secretly shut down an entire industry without anyone noticing? That would be like trying to ban boating nation wide without anyone noticing. Or some other multi-billion dollar industry. They couldn't do it if they wanted to. This guy at ESPN is a writer for the saltwater fishing section of their site and he clearly is afraid that Obama backing the international ban on commercial fishing for Atlantic bluefin tuna could lead to a possible ban on sportfishing for Atlantic bluefin here in the US. This is just a paranoid knee jerk reaction to this tuna deal. There's no way to shut down a multi-billion dollar industry like the sport fishing industry without anyone noticing. It would put millions out of work. Besides congress would have to do it. When Obamas presidency is over and this hasn't happened or been reported by anyone in the media I wonder if anyone will post here that it ended up not being true? Maybe they'll say it almost happened but that hundreds of millions of anglers contacted their congressmen and got them to secretly ban together and defeat this evil plot without the news finding out about or reporting any of it. It's impossibly Charlie. The President doesn't have the power to make laws. Only Congress has that power. The only power the President has is the veto. If you really feel this is possible though, contact your congressman and let him know about it.

Quote from ESPN's outdoor editor 15 Years, 3 Months ago

Here's a quote in response to this article from Steve Bowman ESPN's outdoor editor
"Regrettably we made several errors in the editing and presentation of this installment. though our series has included numerous news stories on the topic, this was not one of them -- it was an opinion piece, and should have been clearly labeled as commentary."

What I heard was that socialist death panels would be choosing which anglers get to fish, which get medical treatment, and which are forced to stand in rivers, swamp their waders, and drown.

Two words...Executive Order
With a stroke of the pen, a presidential order becomes law...no vote by congress...that's how that senile penut farmer from Georgia kept the US from being energy independent by prohibiting oil exploration in Alaska, that's how the cheating sexual predator molestor of interns further kept the US from being energy independent by prohibiting oil, gas, and coal exploration in Wyoming, and that's how the current office holder is going to further disable the economy of the US by prohibiting the cutting of timber in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, & Arizona.
Executive Order, stroke of the pen, law of the land.
How's that hope and change treating you?

Yeah, President Bush signed over 250 executive orders in 8 years (probably a Rove planned conspiracy)...in 2009 alone, the current hop and change guy signed 39.

The news and government can tell you anything they want and disguise it with smoke and mirrors to make you think they are or are not doing something you don't like. A lawyer friend of mine explained how also these things can be "piggy-backed" onto another bill that has nothing to do with fishing and get passed in the fine print. It may just be a small item right now, but I would definitely keep my eyes open in the future on all bills to watch for this. This is not the first time I've heard about this from friends in DC that are lobbyists. The sad thing is to consider how many other bills and laws have been snuck in that we thought were hoaxes, because that is what they wanted us to think.
Remember too, that this would affect all fishermen, whether they be bait or fly. No, the President doesn't make the laws, but he can have a heavy hand in the development of bills that go through congress and then get his signature of approval after they are passed.

Of course! That's to ensure that HMOs can make enough profit so their shareholders can buy that $5000 baby seal fur toilet seat cover. Isn't that the 'merican way?
It's a CONSPIRACY, I tell you!

Yes, just like all of the detrimental environmental changes the Bush administration enacted under the cloak of darkness. Choose your poison, but apparently some administrations favor real poison.
Ah, now it's starting to feel like the old days here.
