I know this will probably start another fire, but feel like I should say that, while I know that there is the perception by some that I personally was "heavy handed" in my time of helping to administer this board (I resigned from the position about 6 months ago, despite my current "Admin" label), even to the point of being called a "Hitlerator" and worse, virtually every edit that I made on this board was run through and approved by the larger Steering Committee as being appropriate to the goals of the NCFFB.
It was never anyone's intention to take the fun out of the place, just some of the vulgarity, and if you were to review the edits that were made by me, you would see that this was the case across the board.
There are a number of other circumstances, some that have been hashed through publicly on this board, others that have not, that led to many of the differences here. These were completely out of the control of the Steering Committee.
You may ask, "Why have a steering committee?" It is as simple as Greg deciding that he needed to take time away from the board, for personal reasons, that he set up the steering committee to keep things running in his absence. He requested input from a fairly large number of people during the transition to the new board format and those that are on the steering committee the remnant of those who helped with that effort. The fact that there were (ARE) shortcomings in the board software led to a lot of venom being pumped at the steering committee, who took it pretty well, I think, considering the constraints we are under.
That being said, I resigned from the board those 6 months ago because I didn't want to be "in the way" of the board's potential return to its former condition. In fact all of the steering committee has backed way off to let the board regain its own personality.
So, it is up to you. If you liked the old board, be the old board. I don't read or post much these days, I have lost a lot of interest in taking the abuse that I did any longer. I post where I think I can provide positive and/or constructive input, but no more.

Nothing taken personally, OT. I've certainly enjoyed some of the bantering since joining this community, and I've certainly been on the receiving end of a number of comments. There's a difference between a little teasing or flaming and outright wrath, obscenity and mean-spititedness that "chases" folks from the board. An example? Looks like we kinda lost Buzz.
Again, just my 2 cents.

If I am not at a family wedding or family reunion picnic (TBD as soon as certain sister-in-laws finalize the social calendar) that weekend, I'll be there the 11th through the 13th.
I don't need no raffle, hat, sweatshirt, or T-shirt...just cigars, Scotch that's at least 12 years old, and the company of folks (Probably Snobs) that know the difference between Shineola and that other stuff.

Its just like the health care debate - "we know what's best for you and we will make it better despite what you want". Just like eliminating the ban on interstate sales and tort reform - get rid of this useless board software and remove the posting restrictions. Those two changes started the demise.
There was a false belief by a minority that this forum was supposed to be all about fly fishing, 24-7. Wrong! This was a social forum that brought those with fly fishing interests together. There was a lot of discussion, banter, flaming, etc.... in addition to fly fishing. Just like when you go to your local club meeting - not every word is about flogging the water to a froth. But, there was fishing info sprinkled in. When is the last time someone asked a tying question, a rigging question? Of course, the naysayers are going to say "people are afraid to ask in fear of the responses". That did happen on occasion. But the whole story is never told - there are those that asked for the attention. I don't remember any sincere requests going down in flames. The invisible minority has made sure that nobody will ever be subjected to possible negative response by making sure there is nobody left to ask a question.
You want a sanitized board - there are plenty of them out there to satisfy you. I guess compared to its previous glory - this board is one of them.

A few things you need to know about me:
I has been known to cure narcolepsy, just by walking into the room. My organ donation card, also lists my beard. I'm a lover, not a fighter, but I'm also a fighter, so don’t get any ideas. I do miss the board of old. Even with its sometimes rudeness....I wish we could get back to that. It was fun, interesting, and informative. Where did everybody go?

Some got old and don't post as much as before
Some got married and don't post as much as before
Some found new interests and don't post as much as before
Some jumped on the fad of flyfishing and don't post anymore
some died and don't post anymore
and some just plain got busy and don't post
you can exchange "post" for "fish" if you want, cuz if you don't fish, why post?

I think a lot of the banter on the “old board” was from folks that all knew each other, either prior to the board, from meeting one another at a bash, or they met at an outdoors show or something. It makes sense that good friends and fishing buddies might flame, mock and/or make fun of one another. However, I think the vast majority of the folks that looked at the board and were not in this “inner circle,” and didn’t get the jokes or the banter, and thought that this place was just full of a bunch of @$$#%!+$. They saw people post, get flamed, mocked and belittled, and were not willing to subject themselves to that kind of abuse.
From what I have seen, that mockery still exists today, but in a much lesser degree, since so few people post here now, and so many of the old instigators are gone. But those do still post are all too often chastised for “improper technique,” taking photos of fish, using a bobicator (or not), returning gear to vendors, WHATEVER. I think that most people don’t think it’s worth their while to post, or even READ what is posted here because they don’t want to face the abuse that they might get from people they don’t even know.
Pointing fingers and assigning blame to “the powers that be” (or whatever name you want to call them) does nothing to help promote the board or it’s future, and I think it will continue to be more of the same if this negativity continues. I’ve been here, albeit, mostly lurking, since the days of Billy, DBaggins, Sierra Kid, BenFishin’, Gollum, Skirt, Sparse Hackle, “Frank,” et al. and I firmly believe that nothing lasts forever, including fly fishing bulletin boards. But sitting around and bemoaning the “good old days” does nothing to help to bring about NEW good days.
