Drew,
Interestingly enough, one of my former Boy Scouts emailed me from Seattle last week. He has decided it is time for him to learn how to fly fish, and was looking for tips. I think he lives pretty much down town. Any tips on clubs or fly shops around the area?
I am two hours south of San Francisco, on the Monterey Peninsula. Most of the time, you have to go almost three hours from here to get to any good trout fishing. Some of those places involve two or more hours of decent hiking.
The surf is always here, and some people catch some fish in it with the long rod. Some don't. Surf perch, occasional stripers, other assorted stuff.
There is some winter steelhead fishing in the Carmel and Big Sur rivers, but there are severe low flow closure restrictions. last year I think the Carmel was open fewer than seven days, and the Big Sur maybe 14 between 7 Dec and 1 March. Check regs carefully.
Welcome aboard, and what the other guys said!!
