Bay Area Day/Weekend Trips??? 15 Years, 5 Months ago
|
|
Hi all, just signed up. I'm new to the area, moved down to San Francisco from Seattle several months ago. I got a few trips in during the last bit of summer but didn't have much luck (went once to Putah Creek near Winters and once to the Stanislaus near Oakdale). Wanted to join the conversation on here, hopefully get to know the area better. If anyone could recommend some areas to check out area San Fran to get me started, sure would appreciate it.
Thanks and look forward to chatting it up.

I live in the SF bay area as well. Day trips are still a few hours out, but i often hit the mokelumne river out in the lodi area. Nice river, decent fishing and actually some big hatchery steelhead.
For weekends, Keep hitting the stanislaus, but get out of oakdale. drive another hour and get further up the sonora area. Much better fishing and much better scenery. Plus in the summer time, you can get up into the canyons and escape the heat a bit more.
PM me for more info if you like. Welcome to town.

first you need to decide how many hours driving you are willing to endure to go fishing..
there is fishing available from as little as 30 minutes driving time (SF Bay or Beaches) to 3 or so hours to areas out of Sac or Manteca to 5 or so hours to areas up in the sierra or up in the redding area..
We have members from all over the state, now lets see how many share their knowledge. If you want info on areas with in 2 hours of Chico, I can help.

From Sacramento I have several options within 1 1/2 hours. Of course you need to add another 1 1/2 hours from SF. But here in California we do tend to drive long distances.
You mentioned Putah, but it's infested with NZ snails, and you need to thoroughly clean your boots and waders to prevent transmission to other waters. Nevertheless, the fishing is pretty good, I'm told.
The Lower Yuba east of Marysville at the hwy 20 bridge is premier trout water, but tough. Get a copy of Seth Norman's book, "Flyfishers Guide to Northern California."
Sammy mentioned the Mokelumne. Take hwy 12 east of Lodi and turn off on McIntire road to the hatchery. Very pleasant little stream with good fishing.
Fifteen minutes farther up hwy 12 near Valley Springs is the Calaveras River below New Hogan Resvr.
Once the snow melts it's a 3 hour drive from SF to numerous Sierra streams. Get a copy of Bill Sunderland's book, "Fly Fishing the Sierra Nevada." Nice streams too numerous to list.
For still waters, which I know less about, you've got Lake Merced right in the City. In Contra Costa County there are several options--Lafayette Resvr. leaps to mind. There are others out near Antioch and Livermore.
Then there's the ocean for whatever, and coastal rivers for steelhead, and there's the delta for stripers and largemouth.
And be sure to check the regs for closures and limits. Lots of catch and release water out there.
Also, in late February is the Fly Fishing Show at the Alameda Fairgrounds in Pleasanton. Go, and ask lots of questions. Most are generous with info. And start frequenting your local fly shop and ask questions there, too. Support the fly shop by purchasing there instead of online.
Good luck, and post reports.
Cheers,
El Rey

Drew,
Interestingly enough, one of my former Boy Scouts emailed me from Seattle last week. He has decided it is time for him to learn how to fly fish, and was looking for tips. I think he lives pretty much down town. Any tips on clubs or fly shops around the area?
I am two hours south of San Francisco, on the Monterey Peninsula. Most of the time, you have to go almost three hours from here to get to any good trout fishing. Some of those places involve two or more hours of decent hiking.
The surf is always here, and some people catch some fish in it with the long rod. Some don't. Surf perch, occasional stripers, other assorted stuff.
There is some winter steelhead fishing in the Carmel and Big Sur rivers, but there are severe low flow closure restrictions. last year I think the Carmel was open fewer than seven days, and the Big Sur maybe 14 between 7 Dec and 1 March. Check regs carefully.
Welcome aboard, and what the other guys said!!

You have received some good advice from El Rey. Both Sunderland and Norman's books will be very helpful if you head-up to the Truckee area. I wrote the Truckee River chapter in Norman's book; it is outdated relative to current angling regs on the river; Bill's book has the right info on regs and some of my suggestions on fly fishing the Truckee.
Other suggestions for this area:
1----Nov/Dec 09 issue of Northwest Fly Fishing has an article on the Truckee River.
2----Steven Haggard's "Fly Fishing in the Tahoe Region.
I recently started a blog (www.flyfishingcalifornia.blogspot.com) and occassionally give some reports about fly fishing the Truckee area...and other unrelated matters. Such as a recent Trinity steelhead trip and I'll make a report or two on Chilean Patagonia; being there 1/29-2/14.
Also don't miss the upcoming Fly Fishing Show; 26-28 February. I'll be in the Truckee Guide NetWork booth.

I love talking fly-fishing. So, if you want some info on fly angling my "home waters" in the Truckee area, do not hesitate to contact me off the board; whether by phone (530-587-7333) or e-mail (cyberfly@cyberfly.com). Please be patient relative to a quick reply; most especially during May-October.
My latest crusade is limiting undo fly fishing guide impact on the Little Truckee River. This small venue is being abused my commericial guiding interests. Consequently the fishery is being abused, IMO, most especially by guides to the detriment of the fishery. Moderation is the key in usage.
During the last two seasons I've diplomatically mentioned to many guides that they should coordinate with others guides so that they minimize impact...it has been to no avail. Some entities are more guilty than others; weather independent or "stabled" (outfitter or fly shop). So I've just started taking this public. Any civil suggestions/comments on limiting guide impact would be appreciated.

NOW FOR THE SPAM!!
Simply, I'm a fly fishing junkie. In 1984, in order to justify my addiction, I started Thy Rod & Staff in Truckee; the longest existing, fly fishing guide service in the Tahoe area and possibly one of the longest in California. I'm an independent; so the "buck stops with me". I tailor trips to the specific desires and skill levels of the client; no "my way or the highway" guiding.
Simply, experience counts folks! 2009 will be my 26th year exclusively as a professional fly fishing guide in Truckee. As long as I enjoying the interaction with other passionate fly anglers and/or those new to the sport; my service will continue into the future. I also "host" fly fishing club outings.
Encouraged by clients & family I started the Reel School of Fly Fishing in 1996. There are scheduled one & two-day clinics through-out the "general" season; entailing a maximum 3-to-1 attendee-to-instructor ratio. Now, since the season if open year-round; I have a scheduled snow-shoe/fly fishing group-outing during March.
Again in 2010 I will be "hosting" two groups at a private lodge in Chilean Patagonia; located 2+hours from Coyhaique, Chile. The lodge accommodates six (6) fly anglers only. It is located in an isolated river valley (40 minute jet-boat ride down river...no roads). From my past experience in this area, I'm guessing it is like Montana was 50-60 years ago....far-far-away from the "real world". Inquire for specifics, I will be going there every year. I've arranged with the lodge for some incredible pricing for two "hosted" weeks in 2010. Also I can arrange other stays and special pricing...contact me.

Drew,
Welcome aboard. There are a number of folks that know the lay of the land in California on this board. Lot's of fishing in this state, from stripers in the delta, to bass at Clear Lake, to steelhead in the Trinity/Klamath, and trout in a lot of places in between. Surf casting for perch and stripers, panfish in many warm waters, shad are a top draw in the Spring in our valley rivers. Some of the spots are closely guarded secrets, but most on this board share freely outside of the public eye via email. There are also a number of good fly shops in the north half of the state which can provide insight.
Enjoy your time in the Golden State. Lots of good fishin' here.
Phil

There are several lakes south of San Jose, people on the board have been ignoring, (Calero, Uvas, and Guadalupe to name only three), these offer (some)fishing access (obey all signs and regulations of course).
