part 1 15 Years, 8 Months ago
Hi everyone!

I got on the Board today to share some info on a flyfishing magazine I found, and was just going to post about it, but I feel I need to vent about some things I see going on here, that you may not see because of regular viewing. I stopped posting here a while back, the board was painfully slow loading and the board had changed, both in tenor and quality.

Anyway, I was reading the summer issue of "Drake" magazine at a friends house, I liked it so much, I went looking for the current issue at a local fly shop. Nope, they don't carry it. I went to another larger flyshop more than 100 miles from home, Nope, they don't carry it either. Called my friend, found out he bought it at Barnes and Noble, so I hit the local B& N in Fairfield, they have a whole stack of them. One of the BEST FF Mags I have read, I read it at the store with a cup o' Joe from Starbucks, took it home, read it again, read it again cover to cover this morning. Great photo work, good sharp, crisp humor and interesting articles. Any FF mag bold enough to throw a jab at baitfishers right on the cover, is ok by me. Best fish porn I have read in years!

PS> Flyfisherman magazine has been redone, love the up to date format and John Sherman pic on cover, maybe print journalism isn't dead.

PSS> HEY FLYSHOPS, YOU NEED FISH PORN IN YOUR STORES. Don't complain about lagging sales and Big Block stores taking your customers if you don't carry the milk and eggs of the business.

part 2 15 Years, 8 Months ago
I had to drive to Burney to interview a new prospective Wilderness Unlimited member, and made a reservation at Bidwell to kill some time.

Driving up it was stormy, Hatchet Pass was 50 foot visibility fog from Montgomery Creek to the summit and light rain. Luckily, I followed a CHP the whole way. On Bidwell Ranch, it was gusty 20 mph+ winds, 45/50-ish degrees at noon, with dark threatening clouds above. It was very dry up there, the fires from the lightening storms this summer somehow missed the ranch but really beat up the surrounding area and neighbors.

As I drove on the ranch, I drove across Lost Creek as it comes out of Pond #2, expecting to see a dozen or so 3lb. rainbows like always, and was surprised to only see one little 12" trout finning just above the culvert under the road (those of you who are members or have been guests, know what I mean). I parked, hiked a little ways downstream, saw nothing there either. Just leaves, sticks and grass floating on the surface blown in by the wind. I couldn't figure it out where the trout went, there is always were fish there. Maybe they were freaked by the storm, maybe the Bald Eagles or the Ospreys had figured out that spot finally.

I drove to Pond #2 parking, one other car there, two older retired guys fishing the pond inlet. One guy was releasing a fish as I walked up, the other guy was standing on the bridge quietly cursing to himself about missing hookups. There are massive weedbeds above the bridge, and as the old guy on the bridge hooked up on about a 6lb rainbow, I got interested and whipped out my iPhone to snap some action shots. Of course, just as I snapped the shutter, the fish broke off, as you can see the whiplash of the rod in the picture.

He went over to grab another fly from his buddy, I got on the bridge to look downstream. I found where all the trout went. There must have been 400 - 500 trout feeding in the current seams below the bridge, it was like going to the hatchery, throwing in a handful of trout chow and watching the fish slash in like Great White Sharks feeding on a hapless seal! It kind of looked like Stripers boiling on a bait fish school. I tried to get a good photo, but the iPhone isn't that great at action shots. I took 10 pics to get these two that weren't blurry. I took a hero shot of one of the guys with about a 5lb rainbow, but my finger covered most of the lens(doh!). That will teach me to take my camera out of the van. In the 20 minutes I was there, those two guys must have hooked a dozen fish, and landed seven. The indicators they were using must be the "senior citizen model", about the size of a Jawbreaker and blaze orange, actually looked like a Kumquat flying threw the air. I guess that is what I have to look forward to as I age. Unfortunately, those pics and the pics of the munching trout boiling on the surface didn't come out, but this one will give you an idea of what I saw.

Lastly, the part I have debated with myself on writing for more than 16 hours, a couple of years really, but I feel this has to get said.

WTF is going on here?

This used to be a friendly place where people would post fishing reports ( more than 20 individual reports on a Monday), fun banter about flies and fly fishing, C&R and delicious shore lunch trout, gear, dogs, people, traffic, single malt scotch and cigars, boats, float tubes, waders... There would be 300-400+ posts a day, everyone was having a good time.

  • A newbie comes on and posts about help finding places to fish in Placer or Nevada Co., but he gets his balls busted instead for not shopping at the local fly shop. No one ever answers his question, either. (Hey Ralph, I hope you're paying fuel tax for all that biodiesel you are making, your local schools, police, fire, and roads need your support.

  • A guide posts a fishing report, and several other competitor guides bust his balls about posting fishing reports. I don't mind guides posting reports, as long as they say they are guides in the post. How many guides have sent emails to posters "spaming" their services? I've never gotten one from RJ, but I have from other guides that currently or previously posted here. I don't even mind "over-inflated" reports, for crying out loud, haven't you heard of "fish stories"? No wonder there is no new blood in the sport. We lose. PETA wins.

  • Why aren't the out of state posters posting reports? ( YOU KNOW WHO I'M TALKING TO!) I know one person who lives on one of the most famous steelhead/salmon rivers in the country; he posts no info and just stirs the pot here on this forum. Why?

  • How is that "no spot burning fishing reports so the lurkers won't show up" working out for ya'? Are the rivers any less crowded in the 5 years since the anti-fish post Nazis started whining? How's that Trinity? Upper Sac? Lower Sac? Delta? Putah?

  • How much work is involved in changing this forum software to phpBB or something similar? Viewing this one is so time consuming, just to reach the bottom of a short thread. Breaking a post into 3 sections as short as a text message is a joke.

  • nice friendly place, this has become!

  • Whining off.

    Brian

    Miss ya Hud.

    You too Janet.

JohnS- all dogs go to heaven. I hope Annie isn't too lonely. Dogs mourn too.

    Have a or on me.

    'Nut,

The Shepherd agrees in full with Mr. C that your assessment of the board becoming the BORED is spot on. The Shepherd also agrees with Mr. C, that it was damned near impossible to agree with all or much of anything you've said in the past, due largely to the fact that in the past you had an uncanny knack for being wrong. Virtually everyone that had either a personality or a pulse has seemingly left this place, so welcome back young man! This BORED needs some life again.

That said, The Living Legend has never heard of the Drake magazine. Naturally, the Shepherd was not about to be running out to buy some useless flyfishing rag, with a bunch of "How To" articles, written by inept hackjobs! The Shepherd did do some searching online, and discovered the Drake has a website and a forum. If the rag is anything like the forum, the Living Legend will take your advice and check it out. The forum there features a very lively flock! They are however, totally clueless and are in dire need of some expert oversight. The Shepherd will have to craft an excellent and informative PSA to introduce himself to the sheeople there at the first possible opportunity!
