most spendy guide? 16 Years, 6 Months ago
|
|
I was looking up some info to go along with a great Turks and Caicos DIY bonefish video I found and I was searched for guides, just to present another option... first one I found was $800 for a full day. That certainly seems like the top end of the range for a fly fishing guide. What's the most you've seen for a guided day of fly fishing??
Here's the link to the little piece I put together.

DIY and guides, spendy or not, don't "go along" in my book.
Totally differnet mindset.
$800 does seem a tad steep though.

"Rivers course through my dreams, rivers cold and fast, rivers well-known and rivers nameless, rivers that seem like ribbons of blue water twisting through wide valleys, narrow rivers folded in layers of darkening shadow, rivers that have eroded down deep in a mountain's belly, sculpted the land, peeled back the planet's history exposing the texture of time itself."

"Each night as I haul myself onto the back of county garbage truck no. 2, there is a familiar wind, some thread of moonglow or starlight, a splatter of dark rain on my skin, something that stirs my memory, and again, if even for a brief moment, I am on some mountain river, some stretch of bright water, full of possibilities, including the possibility of trout, perhaps one that, when hooked, will haul me in and out of time, in and out of life's mysterious and frightening, wondrous and incomprehensible continuum, even to the edges of the universe." -- Harry Middleton

Maybe I'm the only one in this posish, but but if I get to the Bahamas (as I hope to again in the Spring) I'm not going to have the fundage to go with a guide every day. I'll have the funds to go with a guide ONE day... and only if there is someone to split the guide with. However, I will likely go for 4-5 days and all those days are fishing days. I don't need to work on my tan. My people don't tan.
Guiding one day and self-guided the rest seems like a good way to both make sure you catch some fish, and feel like you are doing some of it yourself... at least that's how it makes me feel.

This is just my opinion...
If I were going to some exotic (or just new to me) place to fish and wanted to improve my chances for the entire trip and I could afford a guide for just one day... I would tell the guide upfront that I'm going to be there for x-days and I want to learn as much as possible about how/where to fish. Learning as much as I could, even to the extent of not catching while being guided, would be my focus. Tans are overrated.

Probably a good idea to be up front about how long you are going to stay... if the guide finds you out on his favorite flat the next day... might not go well.

That is a tad spendy. Most I've spent is $500/day, and that included meals, transportation, lodging, licenses, booze, cigars, etc!
Any good guide should be willing to share his expertise, even if only for a day. I am usually up front with a guide when I'm asking to learn and become familiar with a new area. They know we're not all millionaires!

I spent 6 days fishing in the Bahamas for Bonefish. Different guide each day, different locations each day. They knew where to find the fish. depending on the factors,,tides, moon, wind, etc... Cost was way less then $800 per day, but it was a few years back

Yeah, that's the price I'd expect. $800 seems really spendy... I remember finding a similar price for a guide around the US Virgin Islands. Go figure. I guess it is a cost of living thing.
