My wife, Ann, hasn't been fishing in several months and wanted to catch some fish. But because she is disabled from spinal stenosis, we had to find a place with easy access and stupid fish. (Ann has another surgery scheduled in Oct. that will hopefully solve the problem.)
What leapt to mind was the WF Carson in the meadow. We started first at the pool opposite the campground on Blue Lakes Rd. She could sit on her chair and cast into the river. Fun watching the little guys inspect the fly, then either turn away or grab it. She caught a few, but they were tiny. The larger fish were avoiding everything--that place really gets hammered.
Next stop was the HP Access site near the intersection of 88/89. They have a paved pathway out to two platforms over the river. Beautifully developed site. Ann could sit and easily cast into the pools. Lots of planters swimming around, and she caught a few.
Meanwhile, I was fishing upstream for a while, then later, downstream towards the 89 bridge. The fish were eagerly grabbing my EC Caddis.
Then about 5:00 I went back to the platforms and the pedestrian bridge. Fish were rising everywhere, and we were hooking up on nearly every cast--still the same EC Caddis. Mostly 6"ers, but many in the 9" to 11" range. Haven't had a catching day like that in a long time, and Ann was stoked. She wants to try it again. Next time we might evern keep some for dinner.
Speaking of dinner, we decided to travel home via Hwy 50, rather than 88 and the Morman Trail. Stopped for dinner at the St. Pauli Inn. Decent German food on the deck overlooking the SF American.
Nice day. We'll do it again.
Cheers,
Harlan
PS: Additional notes:
Lots of kids fishing with power bait catching maybe one or two while we were hauling in one after another. Overheard several comments--"boy we have to learn how to flyfish." Felt smug--is that one of the 7 deadly sins?
Also, the St. Pauli Inn closes at 7:00. We just made it.
