On Friday night my wife offered up that if I let her sleep in, she'd let me take the rest of the day to go fishing. I jumped at this offer. I figured I'd head to the East Carson or the Moke... but, as I got ready to get in the car, I could not resist heading to the East Walker, even if it is another hour further away, at least, than those other two locations.
This is the first year I've fished the EW so I had not seen it this high or off-color before. It's like a new river. I stuck with the streamers, despite lower productivity. I'm trying to get better at streamers and figure the only way to do that is to fish them... although I do sort of feel like the "when you have a hammer, every problem looks like a nail" guy, as streamers probably were not the best option. Still, I had lots of grabs, although many fewer hook-ups. After 5 hours of fishing I had one fish landed and 6 hooked/lost. Once the sun went down things picked up and I ended up landing 6 more streamer-caught fish including one of those ridonculous fat/ugly rainbows that went a chunky 19". Almost all the fish were caught on a smaller conehead white streamer. I had some good action on some "nut crackers" (a pattern I got at Orvis) but fewer fish stayed put on that streamer. I didn't have action on any of the larger streamers I got up in Sisters, OR that were designed for Bull Trout. I didn't get home until 11:40, so it was a long day and a long drive. Any day on the water is a good day and catching a few fish on streamers is always nice.
