The Northern California Fly Fishing Board

Well... after getting lots of good advice from Phil about places other than the Metolius to fish, I ended up on the Metolius. An old friend of mine who moved up to OR a few years ago took me over to the Metolius, a river I had not had a lot of success on in the past. It was... wonderful. Not only is this river just a beautiful place, but the fish were being kind and in the first spot we fished I stuck two beautiful rainbows. I finished the day with 8 rainbows to hand with the largest going an honest 20", caught on a big ole' Green Drake dry fly. I threw streamers a little and while throwing a "Nutcracker" had a big, mean shape appear on the flie's tail and take a look. Got my pulse going, but not my drag... no take from the big Bull. Also had a couple whitefish, which are native and I don't mind at all. Finished the day looking up the river at a bridge and seeing a BIG trout... I go down to the river, make the cast, the fish eats and I break it off on the hook-set... I suspect I had a knot in the line... OK, I actually KNOW I had a knot, but I was just in too big a hurry to re-tie... ha ha... that's a lesson I have to re-learn every few years. Great day on the water with a good friend I have not seen in years on a really beautiful river. Hard to argue with that.

Sounds like a fun day on the water Bjorn. Do you have any time to hit something closer to home? East Carson 7/17-7/19 perhaps?

Hey Dustin, depends if I have cover for childcare and I doubt I do... pretty much my whole life depends on this now!

The metolius is awesome, was my favorite river when we had Bend as our homebase for fishing. Never hooked into a Bull there but i tried hard... though i caught a 24 incher back in cali with a pattern i bought for bull trout up on the metolius. Also the Fall river up there is super easy to access and was fun fishing. Dustin if you ever want someone to hit the EC with let me know.

Yeah, I picked up a few nasty streamers I can't wait to throw on the EW... but, I have to wait... so, I guess I picked up streamers that I CAN wait to throw on the EW.
