I've wanted a bamboo rod ever since I learned what the hell they were, but when I saw the price tags I decided I'd wait...a LONG time.
The other day I received a brochure touting a line of cane rods made by The Headwaters Bamboo Co. They have 3 models, from $330 - $770, AND they're offering a 20% discount if ordered before 7/1.
Also, you can play with the rod for a month and get your money back if you don't like it.
That evening I picked up the copy of John Gierach's book, "Trout Bum" that I'd been reading, and the next chapter was entitled, "Cane Rods". Hey, I know divine intervention when I see it.
With a little delving, I discovered that the Headwater rods are started in China and finished in the good old USA. Two years ago there were some aesthetic problems, and they lacked consistancy, but apparently they've been learning.
I can't find any recent info on these rods. Anyone out there know anything about their quality now or have any suggestions for an entry-level cane rod? I'm thinking about a 4/5 wt. for San Juan River 'bows.
