Utah and Montana Bound! 16 Years, 8 Months ago
Joey and I heading to Utah in search of Green Drake's on the Provo for 4 day's and then we are off to the Slide Inn for Salmon Flies on the Madison. We are meeting some reps from Hardy and will be trying some new mid range rods they are now making. Then we will go to MT and try to perfect the "Jerk Strip" for trophy trout. I'll try and post a few reports along the way.

Tight Lines ,

Jet & Joey

Salmon flies already have peaked on the Big Hole based on first hand reports from someone there last week as they followed it up in elevation. Not sure what the elevation difference is and how to figure out if you missed it or not. On the Big Hole, it will be done by next week. Of course they also had plenty of rain accompany the salmon fly hatch as well so water was high and in the trees along the edges. Day time temps ran in the 40's with just one day when it got to 70. I wrote down the areas they fished while at work and don't have it here at home. Hope this helps.

I'll be heading that way (MT) for 10 days in mid July via Spokane. I sure hope the wife tolerates reading books on her vacation while I fish.

I have fished the Middle Provo the last two years and sow bugs during the day and E/C Caddis at night are great producers. I have also caught my biggest browns right at dark so don't get off the water too early. Here is a link for a small, but friendly fly shop in Heber City if you haven't been there before. Good Luck!

Good luck Joe and Joey. Wish I could join you this year. I love the Slide Inn area.

Don't let Joey wear out too many fish!

The fishing in Utah was pretty tough but I did hook the biggest trout of my life twice on different days but never landed him. The middle Provo has some big fish and was easy to navigate. Perhaps we'll return some day. I know where that big fish lives. The Madison is a little high but clear and the big fish are looking up. Just don't tell anyone. Joey broke his first rod which happened to be my first nice rod. The ole Sage SP 590-2 bit the dust when his dry was snagged on the back cast. I hope we can get her fixed. Trying to keep up but it's funny how my back hurts when the fishing is slow and feels great when the fishing is hot. Will have report when we return.

Tight Line,

Jet

I had two nice trips to Utah in 2006 and 2007. The Provo was tough for me in the main stem but I found a small offshoot and caught a lot of fish. Also fished a nice stream on the way from Torrey to the Provo. Harrington Creek? Lots of nice fish, lots of horse flies. Forgot what those SOB's were like. Cast, slap, cast, slap. Slap. Slap. There's a lot of water to explore in Utah. Enjoyed the Fremont River, but you need to fish with a guide, the key stretches are private property. On your way up to Montana now? I'll be there July 20-24. I've been reading reports on line. One shop described the best tackle for the Yellowstone as dynamite and a net right now. Still pretty bad from run off. Another few weeks might be just right.
