Spey Rod Advice for a Newbie 16 Years, 9 Months ago
Got a buddy down here in southern AZ who is gonna ask his wife for a spey rod for his upcoming birthday. He asked me for advice but I'm worthless on this matter and told him I'd post the question.

John wants to use the rod in AK for silvers up to about 15 lbs and steelies that will generally be smaller than 12 lbs. He was quite frustrated on our last trip when the silvers were rolling about 5-10 feet past his casting range.

He usually fishes fast rods and I think the max he wants his bride to spend is about $400.

What should I tell him, switch or spey? Which models?

I have no idea where the hell he plans to practice, but I have some videos he can borrow. We have a lake about an hour away, and there's real grass in our city park.

Gracias.

Bruce

I have an idea sell him yours. You are never going to use it.

But seriously a 13 ft 7 wt tfo deer creek or an echo Dec Hogan 13 7 should fill the bill.
Redington also has some good rods in that price range.

IMHO it is more important to get the right line combination for the rod than which rod you buy. I would reccomend you look at the charts that rio reccommends for lines and go up to the next line size. It seems to work better for me.

Hey FH,

I KNEW when I saw you'd answered my post that I was in for a reaming!

I've gone through much self-examination, and I've concluded that the reason I don't spey fish is that it just wouldn't be sporting.

I'm so deadly with a one-handed rod that to use a spey would be like hunting for deer with a .50 cal machine gun.

I have to give those poor fish SOME kind of chance!

Hey, thanks for the suggestions.

Baaarucie,

Advise your Buddy that Spey rods are for inept, hackjobs with the flyrod who are totally lacking the skill required to cast a one hander and that instead of buying a fake rod, your buddy should invest in casting lessons! If your buddy is like 99.999999993% of the clueless lineslappers that the great Shepherd encounters while astream here in the People's Republic, he must constantly remind himself: "Ten and two, ten and two..." as he falls well short of reaching that rising fish a mere 80 feet away! Senor Shepherd as you've witnessed, is a virtual wizard with the one hander, and can pitch casts into the next zip code, all day long, without ever adding a haul! While most CA flyanglers, haplessly fail in their futile attempts to cover the water, The Almighty Shepherd consistently performs the angling equivalent of "Globetrotter Moves" while astream: Sidearm casts to 110', across the body casts to 95', casts that sail between the legs of inept idiots that ultimately hook the HUGE fish those mindless drones are literally standing on, etc!

The Shepherd could outcast 99.999999998% of the morons astream here in CA by simply tying a fly to a 4' length of monofilament and tying said mono to the business end of his johnson and "springing wood"!

Get Back to Work and Short Some Stocks! 16 Years, 9 Months ago
My buddy was fly fishing before The Shepherd's father met his ewe. How far can the Shepherd cast with trees 20' behind his back?

If The Shepherd got his fishing ass to streams that weren't only NorCal Valley sewers, he'd find that he can't always go to his favorite toilet bowl where backcasting ain't a problem.

The Shepherd should also note that BRCD is well over $7.00. If The Shepherd had listened to Baaaarucie last week, he'd really be in the green today. Baa baa Shepherd, have you any wool...that isn't pulled down over your eyes?

The shepherd doesn't know excrement from shinola when it comes to spey casting. He should stick to telling half truths and lies
about his stock trading prowess and leave the advice about fishing to people who actually fish for steelhead.
Btw the local ditch has summer steelhead in it and I have been putting a serious hurt to them the last couple of days.

Re:Spey Rod Advice for a Newbie 16 Years, 9 Months ago
at the risk of actually answering the question - i think a good choice for those applications would be the sage z axis 7136 - assuming his wife really loves him

pairing the right line and reel with the rod is really the most important thing. for a newbie (and for pretty much most people) i would recommend a rio skagit system with interchangeable tips - the best match for that rod is a 500 grain with a 5 foot cheater. this will be the easiest to cast and will provide the greatest versatility for fishing different flies at different depths. for a more traditional approach, go for the windcutter or powerspey. you can see all the line recos for pretty much every two handed rod if you click on the spey line recommendations here: http://www...ts.com/page.php?recKey=9

in terms of reels, just keep in mind that spey lines are typically much fatter and longer than traditional overhand casting lines - and that since the rods are much longer it requires a larger reel to balance well. for a 7 weight two hander, you're looking at reels typically designed to match with 10 weight single handers. a good source for seeing which reels match best with which rods can be found here:
http://www...s/large-arbor-reels.html

there are less expensive options out there for sure, and some of the others mentioned earlier in this post would be just fine for a newbie - if the newbie is a good single handed caster then picking up the two hander should come relatively easy -

oh, one more thing - and sorry in advance for being a little technical - but "spey" is a type of cast, not a type of rod. a spey cast can be done with any type of rod - in fact, once you learn the spey cast you'll find yourself using it with all types of single and two handed rods.

if your buddy really wants to accelerate the learning curve, tell him to ask his wife to include some instruction from a certified casting instructor with the rod - i can recommend one or two here in CA who might know some people closer to you...

hope this helps.

oh, and pass along this link to your buddy:
http://www.speypages.com/speyclave/
a very good spey forum and source for info.
