Bug Identification 16 Years, 10 Months ago
Hey all,
Can anyone recommend a good book or website where I can look at pictures of insects and identify them? It would even be better if the same site would recommend patterns for the different bugs.

Jeff,

There are at least two out by Jim Schollmeyer that are very good, "Hatch Guide for Lakes" and "Hatch Guide for Western Streams". I seem to recall he may have a third but I don't remember the title. Both of the mentioned books have a picture of the bug and on the opposite page a few examples of the fly. There is a much more comprehensive tome that is more scientific but I don't remember the name. Hope this helps

I second NCL's recommendation of those two books by Schollmeyer and I'd also like to add Fish Food by Ralph Cutter to the list. All three have been very helpful and useful to me over the years.

Westfly.com is a website that provides what you are looking for. It covers entomology and indicates which flies match the insect in all phases of its life cycle. Each fly indicated includes a link to the pattern and tying instructions.

Start at the entomology page, select a bug from the drop-down list, and off you go.

I second Buzz's recomendation on Westfly. Excellent site. It is the primary site I use as a resource. You may also check out Jason Neuswanger's site - www.troutnut.com. He's got tons of bug pics, and some very good work.
