Hot Creek in Mammoth Lakes 17 Years ago
I went down to Hot Creek today about 15 minutes from Mammoth Lakes. When I arrived at the river the BWO's were coming off in full force. I tied on 2 different types of beatis patterns one being Sloan's Mighty May and the other just and old favorite. Made about three cast to land my first fish a healthy 15 inch rainbow. From there the fishing just kept getting better and better. I fished for 3 hours and landed about 10 fish and probably hooked 15 more and lost them. There was quite a few fly fishing anglers on the river today but luckily just about every single slot in the creek was holding fish in good numbers and size. My set up today was a 4 wt rod and I fished indicator less with a size 6 shot. When the pressure seems to get to the fish at Hot Creek I also switch over to indicator less which a lot of people aren't doing at all anymore. Everybody wants to watch a big giant bobber float down the stream. Which is fine be there is also a time and place for it. If your thinking about heading to the Eastern Sierra this opener or sometime soon catch up with me and I'll give you some advice.
