Call me Mr. Mom 16 Years, 11 Months ago
Starting the second week in May, I'll be leaving full-time employment at Friends of the River to become a full-time Daddy. I'm going to take over care of our 2 year old little girl for the next 18-24 months. I'll still do some consulting for FOR, but my main job will now involve arts and crafts, gymnastics, story time, play dates and potty training... I'm looking forward to it. It doesn't make sense in a financial sense, but we still think the ROI is outstanding.

This is no reflection on FOR. I am still a real believer in their work and integrity. They just got 105 miles of new Wild & Scenic rivers in CA... I'm proud to be affiliated with them. This is just a move to better our family and to allow me to support my wife's career a bit more as she works in SJ now 3 days a week and travels more and more.

Not sure if this move will lead to more or less fishing time, but it probably will lead to more fly tying time at any rate.

See you on the water (I'll be the one with the 2 year old).

Hey Bjorn!

Congrats on the decision to change jobs there and support your wifes career. Obviously that will be a big change for you all. I am looking forward to a big change in my life at the end of this year when I retire after 35 years with the Natural Resources Conservation Service. The timing is good as I am looking forward to being able to spend a lot more time with our new grandson Aaron, now about 6 months old.

Of course it will also mean a lot more time to be able to get out and fish, play more music, etc. etc .

With regards to being able to spend more time fishing with your new job, where there is a will there is a way. Here are a couple pictures of how I managed to keep myself out on the water with our kids at a very young age! Just strap em on your back, limit the depth you wade and have a ball just like they will.

Have Fun and Best wishes as you take on your very important new family role coming up!

B-,

The Shepherd is certain that you'll do well in your new endeavor! The potty training should go well, as your little princess will likely have you lifting the lid and turning on the light when you visit the pee-pee room in the wee hours so that you can see the intended target! She'll also have you coloring inside the lines in no time! Outstanding young man!

Wow Bjorn,
I wish you the best in your new endeavor. Based on my own experience you will find this one far more rewarding than anything you get paid for. Although I'm sure they will miss your contribution at FOR, hopefully they'll understand how important what you've decided to do is.

Thanks Stretch. Yeah, they understand. I'll continue to do some work on the side for them, to help keep things moving along. It's a big change, but I'm very much looking forward to it. I want to get my girl playing in creeks and lakes... probably a couple years away from getting her that Echo kids rod.

It's good they're understanding, I doubt my employers would be so.
My oldest used to swear up and down that when he turned seven he wanted to take up fly fishing. Now he's nine and far more interested in baseball and roller hockey than any piscatorial pursuits. There's still hope though. He does enjoy it when we hit the water; now I just have to find a place where he can catch something other than bluegills.

Stretch,

Try the Upper Moke below Highland Lakes between Ebbetts Pass and Pacific Grade off Highway 4 (after it thaws). There are a lot of brookies in there that should be able to keep him interested. There are also a lot of photo opportunities...
