California Flyfisher Magazine 16 Years, 11 Months ago

How many of you are subscribers or regular readers? I just picked it up for the first time last month (February issue) for the first time. Anyway, it seems like a lot of good local and area information, but I'm not a regular reader and was wondering what you guys think.

I'm a subscriber just for the fun of it. It has some good articles but isn't a barn burner by any means.

I liked the local flavor -- maybe it was just that issue. I didn't realize it came out of Truckee. Just looking for some input before I decided to support the local boys.

I've subscribed to CFF for over five years and I enjoy it a lot. Agreed, it isn't a barn-burner, but it has proven to be a useful tool in helping to learn about new places to fish, techniques and tying info. It can be kind of redundant over the years, but there are only so many subjects to talk about, after all. I especially like the fact that it's local and I don't have to read about some private chalk stream in Pennsylvania, with it's picky ten in browns is refreshing. (not that there's anything WRONG with that!) Just my 2¢.
Cheers!

I agree with FlyGuy. I subscribed for several years. While it may not be a barnburner, it gives me ideas on new places to fish and techniques.
Besides, why wouldn't you support the local boys? If we don't support it, we can't cry into our milk (beer or wine) when there isn't a California only flyfishing mag.

I've subscribed for many years. Richard keeps things varied enough that there's always something of interest. His eye on conservation issues is excellent. Seth Norman is always worth reading. I even like it for the letters--lots of excellent feedback, and Richard tends to reply thoughtfully to comments. Compared to magazines like Fly Rod and Reel and Fly Fisherman, it seems much more usable to me. And I do believe in supporting the local guys, especially those who support the resource as Richard does. Go for it.

I've subscribed for over ten years. Its enjoyable to read. It doesn't get overly specific about individual fisheries. How much info do you want printed about your favorite stream anyway? Mike

I've subscribed since close to when it started. I enjoy it a lot. Richard, the editor, is a great guy that does a lot to promote fly fishing.

The article, Guide Flys, was different than anything I'd ever read. I tied several of the patterns and Joel Brodkey was right, they are easy and quick ties. We will see how effective they are. Some I already tie and fish and they are quite effective, so I am anxious to try the rest.
Thanks to all of you who replied. I think I'll give it a shot.

Yeah and it had a great article recently on shad fishing by some local expert . It's almost time for them. I'll have to pick his brain

All above are correct. Richard does do great things and he is the only person really making this magazine fly. My comment about not being a barn burner was not meant as anything demeaning but and I would not be a subscriber if I didn't enjoy the magazine.
