Having never fly fished with my Father 17 Years, 1 Month ago
I went out fishing with Dave and Joe right before I had to head back to California to work for the winter. Reminiscing about the summer, Dave asked me “what was our most memorable trip this last season”. I could not think of just one at the time. Then on the drive back to northern California, I started to think about Dave’s question and I didn’t have just one trip that stood out. It was more a theme: Fathers & Sons.

Having a Father just wanting his son to catch fish and seeing the smile and pride he had in his son when he caught his first fish on a fly left a lasting memory.

A Father and Son out fishing, where the Son is 70 years young and the Father is 94 and seeing how much they enjoyed being out with each other was truly memorable. Having Greg bring his son, Adam, along so he could learn to fly fish, and seeing the pride Greg had in Adam was priceless. They both loved seeing what a great office I have!

I had two days with another Father and Son, Ed and Scott. On the first day Ed wanted Scott to tell his bear story to me. A couple hours later after a lot of laughing and hooking fish, they both finished the story. At the end of the trip while I was grilling dinner, I saw the smile on Scott’s face when Ed was on the phone with his Mother telling her how much fun he was having and that the guide was cooking them dinner on the river. The next day on the river, Scott pulled out a piece of paper and asked if Ed wanted to answer some questions he and his sister had come up with. They fished and laughed all the way down the river. That trip was about them spending time together and for me, seeing the pride and joy the Father had in his Son while fishing together.

So not having the chance to fly fish with my Father, I want to thank all the
Fathers and Sons for letting me be a part of their memory and I hope that I made their trip more memorable.

(or I wish I had a chance to fly fish with my Father)

Michael,

I never got to fly fish with my Dad, but we did get to fish. It was dinner fishing, most of the time - hand lining for flounders, or mackerel, or pollock or cod; or fishing with a cane pole (not a rod, a POLE) with live tiny shrimp for smelt for breakfast. I treasure those memories as some of the best times we had together.

That is one reason why I fish with my sons and grandsons every chance I get, and I nag the sons for more chances.

Precious memories, indeed.
