Pit River Flow Changes? 17 Years, 1 Month ago
I just read in CA Flyfisher that the new minimum flows on the Pit will be raised from 150 cfs to 280cfs. When will it take effect? Sounds like an already tough river to fish will be even tougher.

Did they say on what part of the Pit? Yes it can be challenging physically, but at least bellow Britton (3 & 4), I’ve never fished it at 150, or anywhere close to that. This sounds like a minimum flow level, not “normal” flow.

Anybody else have any input?

I was just laid off from work this week and thought of taking my 11 year old son to the Pit this weekend. If the flows are going to fluctuate or spike it would be a tough trip for the little guy. I usually fish just above and below Big Bend and am very comfortable wading in that area. My son, being shorter and new to flyfishing, might force a different location or activity. 280cfs seems quite a bit higher than typical early Summer flows.

Sorry there Rock… been there done that. Mine was during the Dot-com bust. I strapped a pack on and traveled Europe for a couple months. However, with no kids, my responsibilities were a little different than yours. But getting out of Dodge, anyway you can, is highly recommended! Clear that head…

I have never fished down near Big Bend, I’ve always been around 3 and the uppers parts of 4. So I can’t help you out there.

There have been huge fluctuation during the curse of a day above the lake (about 1000cfs), but not sure how it is below Britton. I think it is usually steadier… but I would think twice before exploring it with an 11 year old. Although he'll probably leave you in the dust getting into and out of those canyons.

The upper Sac seams to be pretty stable and very low for this time of the year… going into the low 300’s

Good luck!
