Raising the dam? 17 Years, 2 Months ago

What are your thoughts on raising shasta dam? personally i used to oppose this plan, but after looking into it a little more i've decided its probably one of the best long term plans to solve our growing thirst other than annexing so cal to mexico and letting them deal with that cf.

Stay inside... never go fishing especially during winter... it sucks... don't go... There are definately no Steelhead in California rivers... You might as well go to Oregon.

That may happen at some point, but passing by Shasta this week, I've never seen it lower. Seem to recall that Westlands bought a whole bunch of land up there in the past couple of years to try and make it a reality. I sure would hate to lose part of the upper Sac and McCloud, however.

I think razing it is a much better idea. Not that THAT is going to happen...

"Rivers course through my dreams, rivers cold and fast, rivers well-known and rivers nameless, rivers that seem like ribbons of blue water twisting through wide valleys, narrow rivers folded in layers of darkening shadow, rivers that have eroded down deep in a mountain's belly, sculpted the land, peeled back the planet's history exposing the texture of time itself."
— Harry Middleton (Rivers of Memory)
"Each night as I haul myself onto the back of county garbage truck no. 2, there is a familiar wind, some thread of moonglow or starlight, a splatter of dark rain on my skin, something that stirs my memory, and again, if even for a brief moment, I am on some mountain river, some stretch of bright water, full of possibilities, including the possibility of trout, perhaps one that, when hooked, will haul me in and out of time, in and out of life's mysterious and frightening, wondrous and incomprehensible continuum, even to the edges of the universe." -- Harry Middleton

It is important to note that when the water doesn't fall, water doesn't magically appear in Shasta Reservoir. Dams don't create more water. There are lots of solutions to the water problems in the state... getting folks in the Sacramento or SF areas to use as little water as those in LA is a start, getting farmers to do things like water at night or invest in technology to let them water whent he crops really need water is a pretty major step that could be taken. I think we should work on those things before we go eating up any of two of my favorite rivers.

Agreed,
Raise that dam and Durnsmuir will become a destination for waterskiers and drag boats using the extended Sac Arm of the lake as a high speed course...world class trout fishing, forget it.
Fight any and all plans to raise the Shasta Dam, this is one infrastructure improvement/job creation project that isn't necessary...please hope that fishermen will realize that this change shouldn't be wanted. If the water is required downstream, release it as the lake fills and charge all the users market rates through a meter! That may create downstream water conservation practices as well as produce revenue (yeah, cotton products, lettuce and celery is going to cost more, get over it, cut back on other expenses).

You might have heard that here in AZ we've been in an drought for more than 10 years. I see LOTS of wasted water from leaking hoses left on on lawns, green lawns with no desert landscaping, golf courses owning water companies...METERS! That's the answer that I've been advocating for years.
Figure what an average family should use and start bumping up the cost exponentially if more than amount is used. You want to fill your pool, water your lawn, wash your car every 2 weeks? Fine, pay up buddy.

If it was up to me, I would remove the dam.
Of course, when (not if) Shasta erupts. that will be taken care of by Mother Nature.
Just think of Steelhead and Salmon up in their original homes!

There are probably more fisherman in the area that support the raising the dam than oppose it. Us trout fisherman especially when limited to flyfisherman are far ounumbered by bass fisherman. you can limit water use as much as possible but in the end the demand will just keep rising.
It is esimated that the poulation of california will double by 2055. yeah i know many participants of this board will be swimming with trout in the sky by then, but how will we supply water for the increased population.
I would love nothing more than to see it come down completely, but that is never going to happen. It makes more sense to me to put a few miles of trout water "underwater", than to pull water from a more pristine system. and the idea that you'll be ablr to wakeboard in dunsmuir is very farfetched. Dunsmuirr's is 2029' and shasta dam is currently capable of holding water up to 790' elevation.
