The Motorola "TalkAbouts" sold in packs of 2 to 4 at Costco are my favorites...AAA batteries & cheap (they do not function well after falling out of a fishing vest into the water). Range on a stream between 2-6 miles (depending on terrain) and cheap. Did I mention cheap...<$40 for 2 to 4 at Costco.

Or, you could find a used PRC-25...

While they do not function well after being dropped in the water I can tell you that they will certainly work again after you dry them out.

I like the motorolas as well. Although if I had the cash I'd get a couple of the Garmin Rino GPS radios. Nice to be able to see where your buddy is in real time.

I use a slightly older version of these. Great range and a boom mike come in handy when I a instructing my kids on their casting technique....

I bought a set at Radio Shack. $19.95 for 2. When I lost one down the river, I opted to spend $80 on a "good" motorola set. They were so garbled, I couldn't make out what someone was saying. I took those back, and got another set of Radio Shack. Very clear, good range, and when dropped in the water (a lake this time), they float. Shook it off, and worked just fine. Well worth $20.

I have the Costco Motorola's and they are OK. Like metioned they quit working when wet even a little rain. I would look for something weather resistant and check the ranges too. Seems the newer models have upped the range to 10-12(?)miles. The rechargable batteries that came with my set do not seem to last very long and I use regular batteries when I want them to last.

Good Luck,
Jet
