Dunsmuir Report 17 Years, 5 Months ago

Joey and I joined Granite Bay Flycasters and they had a fish out on the upper Sac. We arrived Thurs afternoon and checked in at the Cave Springs. The water looked so nice right behind the cabins we started fishing right there and fished all the way down to the bottom of City Park. I managed to hook 5, land 3 and had one break me off. Joey had some hook-ups but did not land any fish. He is usually better than me using an indicator. We had a great dinner at the Pizza Factory and me some members from the club.
Friday we decided to hit Soda Springs with a couple members from the club. We fished down stream for 3-4 hours and no one had a grab. Joey and I decided to hit a run upstream from the bridge where there was a small fall and a deep slot along the far bank. I saw fish after a few casts but they seemed to reject my offers. I changed to a 14 red copper john and hooked 2 nice fish but did not land any due to operator error. Joey remained fishless. We had some cold pizza for lunch and decided to hit to water in the city park area again.
We fished hard all day and the only fish I landed that day came in sideways. Joey was skunked again but he never gave up and we put in 10 hours of fishing. We went to Mt Shasta for some awesome Mexican food.
Saturday we had to leave early so Joey could make his last football game.
Bill Carnazzo was putting on a short line nymphing clinic in City Park so made sure to attend the class. I learned high sticking in Colorado when I first started fly fishing and the thing I remember was how my arm hurt holding that rod in the air all day long. This new technique seems promising and we can't wait to give it a try. We fished till 11am and had to hit the road. We did not see any fish hooked during the clinic.

We also ran into Paul Wulff from NCFFB as he was walking along the banks. I said hello but we did not chat too long since we were trying to squeeze out the last drop of fishing before departing. We apologize if we seemed short but Joey was trying hard to squeeze out one fish from this trip.
The Upper Sac is a Special Place and we hope to fish it more in the future.
The last trip we made to the U.Sac was in 2005 when Joey was 9. We saw Joe at the Ted Fay shop and he seemed to be doing well. We picked up the baker's dozen on Friday morning.
Flies that worked. 14-16 Fox pupa tan with flash, 14 red copper john, 14-16 Buckskin, 12 Prince/lord yellow biots and I did land one fish on a October Caddis nymph BH sz6 2457. They did suggested the 18 S&M but I did not get any on it.
Tight Lines,
Jet

Joe,
It was good to see a couple of friendly faces at the park, you weren't short except on time...something I understand, besides, I talked more with Joey than you.
Basic thread nymphs (size 18 hooks with black thread wrapped on the shank behind a brass bead) worked best for me up there this trip...many October Caddis in the air but the fish weren't on the big pupas or the adults...a couple of dumb fish came up for a #16 Parachute Adams too.
I think it needed about a week more.
Good to see you guys, say hello to Jim Victorine for me at the next Granite Bay FF Meeting you attend.

...Bill's clinic for your club nothwithstanding, it was good to see some folks fishing without them bobbers that are large enough to float a submarine...raking the bottom with nymphs and then either pulling them up or letting them swing downstream and rise to the surface has been effective for years...go ahead and Lift Like Leisenring !

I'm sorry I missed you guys. I was up there too. I talked to PGW and was going to see him and the rest of the Mount Tam guys Saturday night but I blew out my right knee and had to go home Saturday morning.
I caught about four small fish on thursday evening. Another six on Friday morning and about twelve Friday night before it got to dark to fish. I had to work very hard for every strike.
My knee started getting stiff at dinnner Friday night and just kept getting worse. I was on crutches by Sunday. I went back to a cane today. Hopefully I'll be walking free-style by the end of the week.
My fish came on the following flies:
#8 Orange Stimulator with all brown hackle
#18 BHPT
#16 Loop body caddis (only one fish)
#16 BH soft hackle caddis emerger/green

Maybe we can meet you on your home turf when your knee is feeling better. My back was sore from the rock hopping and wading.

I'll be heading up there this weekend; but, I may hit the Pit instead, that is if I can locate my wading staff.

"Rivers course through my dreams, rivers cold and fast, rivers well-known and rivers nameless, rivers that seem like ribbons of blue water twisting through wide valleys, narrow rivers folded in layers of darkening shadow, rivers that have eroded down deep in a mountain's belly, sculpted the land, peeled back the planet's history exposing the texture of time itself."
— Harry Middleton (Rivers of Memory)
"Each night as I haul myself onto the back of county garbage truck no. 2, there is a familiar wind, some thread of moonglow or starlight, a splatter of dark rain on my skin, something that stirs my memory, and again, if even for a brief moment, I am on some mountain river, some stretch of bright water, full of possibilities, including the possibility of trout, perhaps one that, when hooked, will haul me in and out of time, in and out of life's mysterious and frightening, wondrous and incomprehensible continuum, even to the edges of the universe." -- Harry Middleton
