Headed over to Mammoth from the Bay Area last Friday afternoon to meet up with my father in law and one of his friends. Traffic was miserable and took 7 hours. Weather report called for a high of 65 with a small chance of showers in the afternoon on Saturday. Unfortunately I believed the weatherman and packed light. By the time we hit the upper Owens around 10:00 there were still frozen puddles and it was spitting rain. I had high expectations as my father in law reported that it was fishing fantastic..... In a word, it SUCKED. Very few fish hooked by anyone. We headed over to Hot Creek around 5:30 and I landed one nice fish in about an hour of fishing.
Sunday we fished Hot Creek and oh what a difference a day makes. Weather was much nicer and I ended up tossing dries to rising fish all day. There was almost no wind which made hitting those tiny feeding lanes much, much easier. Small flies and long 7X leaders made landing fish a bit challenging with all the weeds but it was such a blast! Lots of fish hooked around half landed.
