More sad news..when it rains... 17 Years, 6 Months ago
Dear Friends:

It is with great sadness that I write to let you know that Mel passed away this morning at 3:30AM on his final grand adventure.

Although he had been very ill for a while, it is still very painful to face the fact. At least, his illness did not cause him pain and he went very peacefully and his spirit will be with us for a long time.

I look forward to connecting with you in the weeks to come.

With love,

Fanny

"Rivers course through my dreams, rivers cold and fast, rivers well-known and rivers nameless, rivers that seem like ribbons of blue water twisting through wide valleys, narrow rivers folded in layers of darkening shadow, rivers that have eroded down deep in a mountain's belly, sculpted the land, peeled back the planet's history exposing the texture of time itself."
— Harry Middleton (Rivers of Memory)

"Each night as I haul myself onto the back of county garbage truck no. 2, there is a familiar wind, some thread of moonglow or starlight, a splatter of dark rain on my skin, something that stirs my memory, and again, if even for a brief moment, I am on some mountain river, some stretch of bright water, full of possibilities, including the possibility of trout, perhaps one that, when hooked, will haul me in and out of time, in and out of life's mysterious and frightening, wondrous and incomprehensible continuum, even to the edges of the universe." -- Harry Middleton

Fanny,

My prayers and thoughts are with you. I didn't ever get to meet Mel, but appreciated his wisdom, humor, and the huge smile.
He made a huge contribution to the enjoyment of our life's not-so-trivial pursuit.

My God comfort you in this difficult time.

My Friend Mel Krieger is gone..................... 17 Years, 6 Months ago
Mel Krieger passed away this morning, October 7, 2008 at 3:30 a.m., at age 80, on his final grand adventure. Although he had been very ill for some time, his illness did not cause him pain and he went very peacefully. After having increasing difficulties and being hospitalized for over two months, he was finally diagnosed with a rare aggressive brain lymphoma that became untreatable.

Mel Krieger was a icon in the world of fly fishing and fly casting instruction. After growing up in Louisiana and Texas, he moved to San Francisco in 1964 took up fly casting with a vengeance. He became an avid tournament caster and soon created his popular Angler-to-Angler travel program to New Zealand and operated Club Pacific, a fishing travel agency. Mel founded the Mel Krieger International School of Fly Fishing and taught in Europe, Asia, South America, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Canada. Mel, a NCCFFF Hall of Fly Fishing Fame inductee, was highly innovative and originated both the very successful “Federation of Fly Fishers Fly Casting Instructor Certification Program" and the “FFF Guide’s Association.” He was particularly close to the Argentinean people producing a Spanish instructor certification program and establishing an Argentinean youth fly fishing camp educational foundation.

Mel was the recipient of the 1999 FFF Ambassador Award, the 2005 FFF Lifetime Achievement Award and in 2006. the highest award in fly fishing, The FFF Lapis Lazuli Ring. The Federation has also established the Mel Krieger Fly Casting Instructors Award in his honor to recognize outstanding contributions to his FFF Casting Instructor Certification Program and to casting instruction.

Mel Krieger was my friend and a fine gentleman whose loss will always be sadly remembered by many of us around the world.

Fanny,

Our deepest condolences. Mel was a great man that made a huge impact on the lives of many fly fisherpeople. I learned to cast the right way from Mel many years ago in an Andre Puyans seminar in Idaho. I remember very clearly the lessons he taught, and the passion he shared for our sport. His legacy is strong here on earth, so he has been sought for a higher calling. Many angels in heaven have picked up a tailing loop and he is needed help make their casting pure.

May the Essence of his memory be the imprint of his lessons on many of us. Here's to Mel, the poet, and the engineer in casting.
