A few years back the fall bash was at Lake Siskiu. Hud came up on a Wednesday evening before the bash. On Thursday morning we went out and hooked a bunch of steeleheads. After breakfast, around 11:00am, we headed up the Hwy70 canyon. We ended up having the best day of fishing the NNF I ever had.
It took a bit to figure out, but once we did it was an amazing afternoon. It was balmy with some high clouds and a breeze of about ten miles per hour. The velma mays were climbing out on the rocks and being blown back into the water from time to time. The fish had it completely figured out. Hud stumbled on to it first just by luck. He was getting sick of nymphing so he just tied on a # 10 stimulator. I didn't get it until the dam fish ate my green foam indicator about three times. Hud caught about 25 fish in only two pools. I don't think he even moved fifty yards in three hours.
After that spot slowed down we moved around a bit. We both went through every stimulator in our fly boxes. We even had to resort to using my green felt pen on all our orange and yellow stimulators. We started out fishing 5x tippets but ended up use 3x tippes and were still breaking a fish now and then.
Hud finally quit fishing and just watched. When I lost my last stimulator I hit Hud up for his last one and caught a 22 inch rainbow at Dries riffle for the biggest fish of the day.
He always gave me a hard time about that one.
Well any way this is the first time the date and the conditions have lined up so close to that day. I'm taking off of work early and heading for the canyon in about half an hour.
