Had a wonderful season in AK this year, and was chompin' at the bit to take off for some salt water fishing with the wife.
Thankfully we did not go back to our favorite bonefish spot in the Bahamas (Gustav, Ike, etc...!!).
We chose to check out something new, so we booked a week-long "second honeymoon" in Baja for some bluewater fishing.
She's into the fly thing, so we started out with some smaller dorado 5-15 pound class, which was a hoot. At times, we couldn't drop the fly into the water next to the boat without it getting hammered. Those things are voracious.
Poppers were the rule and watching them crush my homemade Crease flies was a kick.
We kept some of the bleeders, and came home with 40 lbs. of Mahi Mahi for fish tacos. That's good stuff!!
Sailfish were plentiful in the area we fished. And they were not shy. At times, we were surrounded by them. I have never seen anything like that....it was very cool !
All in all a good week with a happy wife, many dorado released with the largest bull weighing in at 37 pounds (VERY strong fish). Four sailfish hooked, one a quick LDR, one a last minute LDR, and two in the boat. I scored one about 130 lbs. and the wife got one as well - about 100 lbs. All on fly.
This married stuff is o.k.
Hit the water today - almost got a L. Sac. grand slam. A few trout....4 smallies, and a carp that ate a Fox Squirrel nymph, but didn't want to be handled.
Sight fishing kicks a$$.
