Last weekend was better than average on the Klamath just below Orleans. In a little under 30 hours of fishing, I hooked 52 and landed 36. Mostly halfpounders, but average size was up. Several 15" to 19" fish. Of course the big one came unglued--about 6#. Mostly bead-head Assassins, with a few in late evening on Polar Shrimp.
The water temp went down two degrees Monday morning after two cold nights and a very cool Sunday. From 70 to 68 in the morning. Evening temp on Friday had been 72.
More salmon showing, though nothing like the old days. Guide Barry Leamon took me out Sunday morning, and it was slow, but I did land 5/7. The fishing was hot Thursday evening and Friday morning, then slowed way down till Monday morning at the Lodge. Those fish do move through in schools, so a spot may be great for a while, then have nothing for a longer while. Luckily, there are always a few strays that can save a session by producing one or two fish.
Used my 6-weight 12.5 foot spey rod most of the time. Practicing for the Babine next week [9/14-20], where it will be the 9-weight 14'4" spey. Early reports are good from B.C. and the Skeena drainage. Norlakes, here I come. I get to try for some salmon off the Sunshine Coast of B.C. on the way up.
