Oregon Fishing Report 17 Years, 7 Months ago
My wife and I arrived last Friday to start moving into our new home in Sunriver. What a great area, although it has been a very busy week and have not gotten out fishing near as much as I would like. Too many honey do's. Although, now that most are done, fishing should be back on the calendar! Our house will be a vacation home for now, but hope to be retired in a couple years and move in full time.

I did get out with a couple of friends early in the week to East Lake. Fished out of a drift boat and covered a lot of the lake. We all caught fish on a variety of techniques. Started out midging over the hump and the three of us landed landed about 8-10 over a couple hours. The morning had warmed up considerably by then, so we headed to some flats for the Callibaetis. Had a real nice hatch come off and we tied on fly after fly to only get refusals and no interest. Finally picked up a few on an emerger dry that is tied almost like an Elk Hair Caddis. I really think I needed a few of Charlie's Parasol patterns. A little later we wind drifted Callibaetis nymphs over the center of the lake for a few more. I missed the East Lake Grand Slam by one....I caught Browns, Rainbows and one Atlantic Salmon. Missed out on the Kokanee.

Headed to Fall River Thursday afternoon. It was precisely 23 minutes from my front door to the river. My friend Terry had pointed me towards a spot that was holding fish. Arrived about 1:00 in the afternoon and fished until about 4:30. Nice afternoon. There was limited surface activity, now and again a terrestrial would float by and a fish would slam it. But nothing predictable. So I stayed with sight drifted nymphs without a cator. Drift the fly down, wait for the fish to move and intercept a bug, and then lightly lift the rod. Often enough it was my fly that the fish had taken. Caught several really nice fish in the 16-18" range. Worked a real pig (24"+) for quite a while. Got him to take twice, but didn't hook him either time. He took a Sawyer's PT and a size 20 Brassie.

We've got a few more honey do's this morning, and then I think I will head to the Fall this afternoon to see if I can tempt the big trout again. Tomorrow we're taking the long drive home.

Giving some thought to hosting a mini-bash up here next spring or early summer.

sign me up for the mini bash!!!! Especially if it's during the salmon fly hatch. Stayed in a friends house in sun River a few years ago and a group of us fished all around the area. What a great trip that was---so many good places to fish. Congrats on the new house!

Got out one last time Saturday late afternoon. Got onto the water on the Fall River about 3:30 and had about 2 1/2 hours to fish before having to get back for dinner plans. Found a nice run holding fish with a few risers. Threw a bunch of stuff at them with no obvious hatch on. Finally started picking up a few fish on terrestrials. Cinnamon ants, beetles and brown hoppers. There was one big fish in the pool, and I tempted him to the hopper on the first drift, and he did what big fish are trained to do....dash for the first log and he broke me off before I even caught my breath. Kept working the hopper downstream and took a number more to about 17". Nice afternoon and preview of future trips to our new home. Took the drive back to California Sunday, and back to work today. Bummer!
