The Northern California Fly Fishing Board

For thirty years friends of mine have made yearly trips to Ennis. I've never gone. One of the gang called me to say he was making another trip this month and invited me to go. My wife talked me into it. I'll have the digital camera (finally need to figure out how to post pictures here) with me. We will be fishing the Missouri, the Ruby, Ennis Lake, a private lake called Haypress, and perhaps a couple more streams. Two days of driving and eight days of fishing. Now I know why I tied all those flies. Mike

In my opinion you can not pick a better time to fish in Montana than the fall, the crowds are mostly gone and the fish are hungry. I went to school in Bozeman and fished hard, when I wasn't hunting hard, through the entire fall. I remember being on the madison in Sept and not seeing another fisherman and having the fishing day of a lifetime (lots of big browns)...not likely to happen in the summer

Water conditions should be perfect. It was really a high water year, with muddy runoff well into July. We found high water and slowed bug hatches right up to the end of July everywhere we went. A friend just got back from the big hole river. Said it was the best fishing they've had is 15 years. They always go the first three weeks of August (only time work will let them off) and usually they face low, warm water. Water conditions this year were terrific. this was one of the few years that it would have been better to fish Montana in August instead of July. Hope you have a great time!
