Desolation report 17 Years, 8 Months ago
Got back Saturday night from a 4 day trip. Was suppose to be 5 day, but between my injured knee and the howling wind we decided to head out a day early.

Started in at Meeks Bay.

Hit Genevieve first. Got there around noon. Didn't see any fish working. Didn't stay long.

Permit had us at Crag for the first night. Very pretty. Not a lot of fish working but did manage a brown. Tons of red-sided shiners in the lake.

Hidden lake looked devoid of fish. Shadow might have had a couple but all we saw in the outlet area were more shiners and perhaps one small brookie.
Stoney Ridge was awesome. Caught a few more browns. Brother broke off a big fish. Saw a carcass that someone had filleted that must have been about 18" - think the one that got away was similar in size.

Rubicon was a nice surprise. Nice campsites and some willing little brookies until the wind came up. Unfortunatly the wind never stopped after that night. Plus, I injured my knee when we climbed down to check out Grouse. Wasn't worth it, looked devoid of fish as well.

Brothers fished Phipps the next day and found many willing brookies in a pretty little lake. I passed on fishing it due to the knee and got a head start on the pass. Heading down to the Velmas.

We stopped at Middle Velma but with the wind coming up it was very tough fishing and seemed and exposed place to camp. We decided late in the day to move down to Lower Velma. Bad idea. Bum knee made the cross country hike down to find 2 groups camped in the only good location on the west side. We hiked back up - ouch. Stayed at Upper Velma. The wind blew harder. Thought the trees were going to fall on us during the night. Still managed a few brookies as dusk.

Wind was still blowing hard the next day and made fishing tough. Knee was hurting so we came out a day early. Hike down Bayview trail on a bum wheel was NOT fun.

Still, a good time was had by all.

Nice report John! I did some hiking/fishing in the Grouse ridge area on Saturday.
I have a bum achilles tendon that keeps me at the back of the pack. I think a knee
is even worse! Did you just strain it or do you think it's something serious?

I need to hit the Velma's some time. I hear they are good. Oh, and I hear you on
the wind....geez! We about gone blown off the water with our tubes on Saturday.
White caps. I decided to tube to the side, get out, and walk around the lake instead
of trying to fight the wind. That proved faster than kicking against the head wind.

By the way...do you get many hot spots on your feet when hiking? For the life of me
I can never avoid getting a hot spot or blister somewhere. I've tried two pairs
of socks, tape, band aids etc. I'm starting to think a pair of Nike high tops might
be better than the expensive hiking boots I have.

Nice pics.

Eric

I did some googling when I got home - and it looks like "ITBS". Basically a band of muscle that runs from hip to calf gets irritated when rubbing across the knee and causes a great deal of pain. Seems to be common in long distance runners who are pushing themselves too hard. It hurts, but will heal on its own with time. Need to do some stretching/cross-training to keep it from happening in the future. Which is all better news than if it was a ligament or cartilage problem.

The Velmas looked great, but I don't know if I'll ever fish them again. The hike up from Eagle is brutal. I'll take switchbacks over those steps any day. On the other hand, perhaps the trail up out of Granite lake and then over might be better...

I did get a few blisters on my toes, but that might have been due to my limping gait the last 3 days. I wore my light hikers this time and other than the blisters on my big toes they felt pretty good. However, I'm wondering if they might have been part of the ITBS problem. Will use my heavy boots next time. They tend to rub me a bit on the ankle but protect my feet pretty well. If I feel a hot spot coming on I stop right away and put on some moleskin. Seems to do the trick. Others swear by duct-tape. I also bought some nice smart-wool hiking socks and wear a liner too.

My next trip in the Desolation might be back up the Glenn Alpine trail. Few areas up there I'd like to check out again.

Well hope the knee gets better. Man, age is a bioootch. I now call
them RP's. Random Pains. I will get throbbing, aching pain from
time to time for no reason whatsoever.

Sometimes I feel like I live on Vitamin I (ibuprofen)

I'm going to buy some of that moleskin. Just googled it. I'll try
anything at this point.

Eric

PS: I feel ya on the leg workout. My quads are sore, but my calves
are brutally stiff. I'm taking the elevator today!
