Yampa River (CO) Guides? Other Advice? 17 Years, 9 Months ago
I am heading out to Steamboat Springs, CO, for a wedding in about a month and am planning to hit the Yampa River while I'm there. Was wondering if anybody on the board had fished the Yampa before and had any advice or recommendations on local guides, or on DIY wading. I am thinking of wading the section that flows through town by myself one day, then hiring a guide to take me to some of the private water nearby another day. Any advice, recommendations, or fish tales from previous trips to the Yampa would be greatly appreciated.

I hunt on a property where the owner owns the river bank for some distance. He has it leased to one of the fly shops in SS. Check there as there are at least two and probably three fly shops in town. Pretty good fishing, at least when I'm there in the end of October.

I've only used Gorsuch in Edwards over the years but they were chock full of info on the Yampa & Steamboat area.

Check out this link for river info http://www...ishing.net/ft_yampa2.htm and this link for guides http://www...dofishing.net/guides.htm

Very large finicky fish below Stagecoach that see a lot of pressure. I would suggest driving down the road from that area and picking an area. It all looks good and fishes very well.

I have never fished the Yampa but it is suppose to be good through town. It has rainbows and browns and northern pike. From Walton Creek on the upstream end of town down for 5.8 miles it is Catch and Release.

You can check this website for some info - http://www...nbow.com/info/report.htm

Below Stagecoach reservoir there is some nice tailwater fishing for a short distance. I had read in the last year that some of the land has been bought up and part of it may be private water now. This is about 18 miles south, upstream, of Steamboat Springs.

Both can be done DIY.

It looks like Gorsuch is now Alpine outfitters - http://www.gorsuch-outfitters.com/
