I have fished the past two weekends.
Two weeks ago: July 4th weekend
We fished the main Truckee in the mornings and evenings. Fishing was just okay. The water seemed a little high and cloudy. I bet it's come down since then. We picked up a few fish. They didn't seem selective, you just needed to get your fly in front of them. I picked up most fish close to the banks, rather than in the runs. Although I had a hard time getting my fly down to the bottom in the runs. Each evening there was a mini hatch. Nothing specfic. I usually picked up some fish with an elk hair caddis, 16-18#.
We also tried the little truckee for a couple hours on our way out. We didn't catch anything, but saw some folks pick up a fish or two on PMDs. They were very nice fish, especially for the size of the creek. We could see some nice fish sitting in holes or along cut banks, but they're very selective (no kill section). Plus, the water was soooo cold (coming out of the dam) that I couldn't stand in it. Too painful when wearing sandles.
This past weekend:
Fished the East Carson for a couple days. Fishing was on and off. One morning I would catch 15 fish, then that evening 2. There were no real hatches to speak of...nothing consistent anyway. I tried all types of flies in all shapes and sizes. All worked more or less, but micro may flies in green or black were the most consistent. Anything feeding off the surface was really small. There are a lot of 4-6 inch fish this year. Some of my best fish were caught mid day, even in the heat. Seemed odd. I hooked and lost two decent fish in the 16-18 inch range, but only saw them for a second. One of them took my orange indicator and broke me off!
Good luck.
