Every year I try to do a guided trip on the Trinity River and last Thursday was the day we had booked for the trip. My expectations were not running to high as my five unguided trips so far this Fall had resulted in one brown trout and no steelhead. Then last Sunday I received a call from The Fly Shop that the guide we had booked had an unforseen family circumstance arise and he couldn't go on Thusday. The effort then was to try to rearrange to another date. After several calls to The Fly Shop on Monday with Duane going out of his way trying to make dates work with the original guide it was determined it wasn't going to work any other day than Thurday because of scheduling problems with my fishing partner. Well up steps Greg Dean who came in on his day off to take us. If you haven't fished with Greg then you have missed a treat, he is just fun to be around and had me laughing so hard at one point I thought I might fall out of the boat.Ok so now the trip is set.
We met with Greg and he said we would be doing Steel Bridge to Steiner which is a good float. I started the day off with a small wild steelhead smolt, I think Ed referred to them as "quarter pounders". But what the heck, it was a wild fish so my day was made. Then my partner hooked the quarter pounder's big brother, he landed it and it was about a 26 inch wild buck. Now the day is definitely made. A while later I missed a nice strike but learned a valuable lession to set down stream, this lession would come into play later in the day and prove to be extremely valuable. We continued to fish hard and I picked up a junior brown with a length of maybe 8 inched, remember those are fisherman inches. At about three we hit a spot that Greg said is a producer. The first run through, bam indicator goes down, I remembered the down stream set and then there was an explosion as large steelhead jumps. We didn't measure the fish but Greg estimated him at 32 or 33 inches, a wild buck, now my day is really made a wild adult. We decided that was so much fun lets do that run again. Bam the indicator goes down and I land a 29 inch (measured) wild buck, now my day is beyond made. We continued to fish that spot as Greg didn't want to "leave fish, to find fish",but no more cooperators. It was getting late and we had a long way to the take out so we only fished a few more runs.
I actually remembered to bring a camera and got a picture of the larger fish but then managed to delete it from my camera, so I guess I have to go back and look for that fish again.
Thanks to The Fly Shop and a "BIG THANK" to Greg for stepping up and for a great trip.
