Kenai Peninsula 14 Years, 9 Months ago
One day while out with my brother Vince Steelheading the Trinity we got to talking
about Alaska and what an adventure it would be to go there to fish for some of the
different species that we just don't have here in Northern California...
I said "man that would be great but I could never aford a trip like that"
Out of the blue he says "we're going and I'll pay for the trip" all I had to do was
get to his place in Quincy ....so after a couple months of research and planning,
on the 28th of August we touch down in Ancorage, picked up a rental car and some food
and other supplies and we were off to the Upper Kenai for a taste of Rainbows and
Dollies ! Once we made our way down to the river we found a zoo..you think the Trinity
gets busy ? it aint got nothing compared to the crowds we found , it was like a boat
a minute passing by but we did find plenty of water to fish and plenty of fish !
It seems the Sockeye run was late and they were their by the thousands !

Vince with one of a hundred we caught that day

Re:Kenai Peninsula 14 Years, 9 Months ago
everything we had heard about Sockeye not biting was wrong as they will bite and
very aggresively , just for the hell of it I dangeled a big pink bunny leach in
front of a school of these Salmon and sure enough one jumped up and grabbed it so
it was fish after fish till we just got tired of catching them .
We never could hook any of the bows we heard about but then we didn't use the beads
that day and I guess the bows and Dollies were keyed in on those.
The next day we found ourselves on the Anker river looking for Silvers and Steelhead
and what we found were small dollies and one silver,
Vince again with the hot rod took this silver with a spinner

and a bunch of these small dollies

I on the other hand stuck with the fly rod and a smolt pattern for a few, fun but
not the #s Vince took with the spinner . Great weather that day but poured over night
and blew that little river out so we headed back up the coast to Deep Creek to see if
it was in better shape...it was. We fished right at the mouth in a line up of other
guys all tossing a spinner with fresh silvers being caught on both sides of us but
none for us...the scenery was great though , sunset across the Cook Inlet

We fished further up the creek the next day still looking for the silvers, we found
a great run and fished it hard ...Zip and walk on to the next one were Vince did
hook into a nice Steelhead but it came undone in short order, on the way back down
we ran into this guy with a nice fish out the run we left hhhmmm

I guess you just have to be paitient but you know us Steelheaders make a few casts
then move on ....thats fishin'!
We fished a couple other small creeks in the area but we didn't do so well and ran
back up to the Kenai for more of the Sockeye

these fish were like clones and readily took the pink leach

alot of great scenery along the way even saw a few Moose

We finished the trip on the lower Kenai fishing for Humpies and Silvers

Cool walkways along the Kenai to protect the river bank with nice stairs
to get up and down from the river, great for us old guys or is that us lazy
fisherman !

I finally got the Silver I was lookin' for and yes that is a rope through his gills
some of the fish we caught came home for the smoker

overall a great trip ..."Thanks Bro"

That little stove was a handy thing to have for morning coffee and chilli dogs,
till we found a little motel room with a fully equipped kitchen ...

Mark

did you get my email from a while back in Aug? Thought maybe you had moved or something (actually the waitress had gone to HS with your oldest daughter and told me the family was still in Lewiston).

Had fun and got one fish of size plus a bunch of 12-13 inchers. I maybe heading back up end of Sept or sometime in Oct. I'll try to reach you again.

Hope things are going well

Hello John, I haven't checked my email for quite a while...too much spam !
Sorry I missed you when you were up and I'll try and make a point of checking the
mail more often. Good you got a few fish at least and if you come up on a weekend
we could fish together but I have used up my vacation time so week days are out.
At least 'till January that is

Mark,

I have a similar single burner I carry with me in the winter for heating water for coffee or soup. Something warm help refresh my old bones after standing in that cold water for several hours. I just never thought of usuing it to heat tube steak, I can now add to my culinary delights.

The Living Legend also stopped by to say hello whilst on the way back from that putrid septic tank north and downstream of your locale, and was thus informed that you were ripping some lips in "The Land of the Midnight Sun"!
