Looks like I am moving... 15 Years ago
...to Utah!

I was called yesterday and offered the fisheries biologist job I had applied to with the Forest Service in Salt Lake City, Utah. I don't have a start date yet, but it is likely I will be in Utah by September.

Any Utah fishing tips would be greatly appreciated (along with any home brewing tips ).

Enjoy

Dawn,

Congratulations and Condolences!!

Obvious fishing tips - The Green R below Flaming Gorge, but only on weekdays or in winter.

The Provo has a good rep.

I'll check with a friend for other ideas.

Tip: Buy a California Lifetime License before you leave - it's good even if you become a non-resident - and IF you are going to be coming back for Steelhead or other fish, it will pay off.

Ave atque Vale!

My experience with Utah fly fishing has been the Green below Flaming Gorge Dam, but it was pretty damn good, I must say. I've heard that up in the Wasatch Range, just east of Salt Lake City, there are some nice small streams with some pretty good fishing too. You're also a short five hour drive from the Henry's Fork area in Idaho, another hour on top of that to be on the Madison or in Yellowstone itself, and not too far from the Wind River Range in Wyoming, all places I've had some pretty epic angling experiences.

Don't worry too much about brew in SLC. The Great Basin Brewing is right in downtown and they make a more than decent selection of beers. I was there for a conference a few years back, and I recall a brew called "Polygamy Porter." I thought it was pretty funny, but when you see the six pack holder and the other slogans on it like: "why have just one?" and "bring some home to the wives" I must say that my estimation of the place went up a few notches. I know that the LDS folks don't own the brewery, but at least the people that run it know how to playfully satirize the dominant force in the land of Deseret.

Honestly, I can think of a LOT worse places to get a job. Howzabout USFS in downtown LA?

Congrats and cheers!

Dawn

Congratulations on the new position. I remember seeing a TV series on team championship FF on what I think was the Provo River. They caught some nice fish. Since there is a NCFFB maybe there is a UFFB. It's worth googling.

Congrats on the job Dawn. I've not fished the Provo River myself but I recall Neal talking about fishing it with good results. And as another poster noted, you'll be within a reasonable drive to some pretty renowned trout waters.

I don't know Utah's state income tax rate, but its financial house has got to be a lot better order than California's...or said another way, it can't be any worse.

Good Luck....If you haven't been there yet So. Utah has as much eye candy as anyplace in the west. You may be one of the few pirates in Salt Lake but the occasional sea gulls should help. Humboldt is wet and green this year. Happy Trails.

Dr. Dawn,

I have this niece that relocated from SF to Park City 2 years ago, she fishes the Provo (bring your own rock), Weber, & Strawberry Rivers and recommends a flyshop in Park City (Trout Bum 2) for guides, gear, & information.

http://www.troutbum2.com/index.shtml

...and regarding the availabilty of adult beverages, I've found everything in good supply (and service) in SLC, there are worse places...like Idaho for finding beer, wine, spirits, & COFFEE!

Petri Heil,

Paul

Best of luck up there Dawn. There are a multitude of fishing possibilities available. Go to the SLC ISE show in March to get the low down on lesser known places. Also some fantastic restaurants of all genre and loads of places for good brew and booze.

Send me a telephone number once you get settled. May drop off some elk steaks on the way back from Colorado if it isn't in the middle of the night.

Wow! Utah? Who'd a thunk it. I've been there a few times, but never for fishing. I hear there are some good trout streams and some nice lakes as well. But I understand the steelhead fishing sucks!

Anyway....I hope this move turns out to be a great one career-wise, fish-wise, and other-wise.

I hope your stay on the Plumas was a good one for you.

Best of luck to you.

Michael

You just missed the spring 15 Years ago
bone fishing opportunities on the flats area of Salt Lake. It is a little known fishery, but for those in the know. . .

Just got back from fishing the Green below Flaming Gorge. My partner insisted on stopping by the Red Iguana for some Mexican food. It was based on something he saw on Diners, Drive ins and Dives as soon as we landed in SLC. We beat the lunch time crowd, in fact the parking lot was empty. Come to find out they were still closed, but they let us in early. When we left, there wasn't a open parking spot available. I am happy to report that the restaurant serves up a fine selection of authentic Mex. If you speak Spanish, you can even order in espanol. The place is so popular that they expanded to 3 restaurants in the Salt Lake area. The one we hit had gas infared heaters on the eaves facing the street. When we asked what they were for, we're told that they were for the winter time crowd waiting outside on the side walk to get in. The beer stays light until sometime in the afternoon, meaning I could not have a Negro Modelo for lunch. It appears that you won't have difficult time finding fishing ops until the water turns hard.

"Rivers course through my dreams, rivers cold and fast, rivers well-known and rivers nameless, rivers that seem like ribbons of blue water twisting through wide valleys, narrow rivers folded in layers of darkening shadow, rivers that have eroded down deep in a mountain's belly, sculpted the land, peeled back the planet's history exposing the texture of time itself."
— Harry Middleton (Rivers of Memory)

"Each night as I haul myself onto the back of county garbage truck no. 2, there is a familiar wind, some thread of moonglow or starlight, a splatter of dark rain on my skin, something that stirs my memory, and again, if even for a brief moment, I am on some mountain river, some stretch of bright water, full of possibilities, including the possibility of trout, perhaps one that, when hooked, will haul me in and out of time, in and out of life's mysterious and frightening, wondrous and incomprehensible continuum, even to the edges of the universe." -- Harry Middleton
