Williamson help 16 Years, 6 Months ago
|
|
I know it's outside Northern California, but just.
I will be in Klamath Falls at the end of this month. I may have access to a boat w/ motor and I could bring my Watermaster raft w/ me. I know nothing about the river other than you cannot fish from watercraft. Any advice would be appreciated. If you do not wish to advise me on a public forum, my e-mail is

"Rivers course through my dreams, rivers cold and fast, rivers well-known and rivers nameless, rivers that seem like ribbons of blue water twisting through wide valleys, narrow rivers folded in layers of darkening shadow, rivers that have eroded down deep in a mountain's belly, sculpted the land, peeled back the planet's history exposing the texture of time itself."

"Each night as I haul myself onto the back of county garbage truck no. 2, there is a familiar wind, some thread of moonglow or starlight, a splatter of dark rain on my skin, something that stirs my memory, and again, if even for a brief moment, I am on some mountain river, some stretch of bright water, full of possibilities, including the possibility of trout, perhaps one that, when hooked, will haul me in and out of time, in and out of life's mysterious and frightening, wondrous and incomprehensible continuum, even to the edges of the universe." -- Harry Middleton

Tough piece of water, with some very large trout. Not familiar with what happens hatch-wise at that time of year. Give the Lonesome Duck a call. They are right on the river and usually have good info or can refer you. Nice place to stay also.

OT, you can't fish from a boat on the Williamson? Is that a new reg? Been years since I've fished it... but it seems like we fished from a boat at the time... as did others. What I remember about it was sly lines, soft hackles and small leaches... I also recall floating over "frog water" and being amazed to see 5-10 pound trout... fish were where you wouldn't expect them and, not expecting them there, we didn't catch those big ole huge fish. If you have a time machine, there is a Hex hatch. Happy fishing.

PT,
Thanks for the reference. I just had to go out to EBAY and buy an old version of Polly's book Tying and Fishing the Fuzzy Nymphs after reading your post. I remember reading a lot of Polly's stuff way back in my formative fly tying days. Nice to reconnect with a new old copy of his book.

Phil,
Dave Hughes and Rick Hafele devote a good deal of ink to Polly and his Mayfly patterns in their "Western Mayfly Hatches" tome...It also covers how he fished The Williamson - good stuff!!!

Someone told me one cannot fish from a boat. I haven't checked the regs myself.

Thanks for the regs there. We were below the Chiloquin bridge launch, so we were legal.
Early in April I was fishing near our place in Placerville and a guy stopped to ask me how the fishing was. Told me this stretch of river didn't open for another two weeks. I was pretty sure he was wrong, but had not re-read the regs prior to fishing. I raced back home to make sure I hadn't just been breaking the law. Despite the local telling me he was positive and that he'd been fishing the area for 18 years... he was flat wrong. The bit of water I'd been fishing has been open year round for the past 2 years.

Bumped into three guys fishing below Hangman's Bridge on the Carson this weekend. One of them was carrying a stringer of fish. I politely told them it was a zero limit area and barbless fly only water. The guy said, "you're kidding, I guess I'll have to release these fish!" They were hanging dead on a chain stringer, and I passed them a few minutes later, and indeed, they had "released them". I guess the racoons and crayfish ate well that night.
