We fished the Trinity the past two weekends (floated it all four days).
Two Weeks ago:
JC to Pidgeon Point, fished very well. The usual crowds, but the fish were there. We hooked 9 fish on Sat., but only landed 4. A couple of them were sight fishing in pocket water. Sunday the weather came in (same run). This time we didn't see any fish the first 4 miles and didn't get any hookups. Then the rain and heavy wind came in. We paddled the last two miles to get back to the car, but we started to see a lot more fish in the river as well. Oh well.
This past weekend
Sat. floated Bucktail to Steel Bridge. We didn't do well, with only two hookups and one landed. We are new to this section. The water is very low. We had to drag the raft over many rocks. Most people I saw who drifted it regretted it. (I couldn't believe how many boat trailers were at the take out.) Didn't see many fish, but the bait fisherman were catching them in the deep holes. Still a lot of moss on the rocks, so you're constantly cleaning your fly off. On Sun. we went back down to JC to Pigeon. Caught some fish up top, but again we didn't start seeing fish until pretty close to Pigeon Point (fewer compared to the previous week). The water level was up about 4 inches from the previous week, so the rain had some effect on the river. Talked to a few people around Pigeon Point while waiting for the shuttle. Most reported 1-2 fish days.
Nothing special about what to use. Any of the regular flies seem to work just fine.
