Here it is - my birds nest variant! 17 Years, 6 Months ago
I gave it a try last night, I think it looks like it could be a great fly!

Fly looks good to me. Couple of questions .... Were you able to effectively do a distribution wrap with the deer hair or did you have to use a different technique? Also I assume deer hair and wood duck act differently under the water. What added benefits do you think deer hair will have? I am not trying to be critical at all ... I genuinely interested. Thanks for sharing a photo of the fly.

I don't know... 17 Years, 6 Months ago
...if I had a dozen or so to hold for a season I may be able to provide an opinion on the effectiveness of the pattern variation compared to the accepted version.

I think we all need some samples to try out.

The deer hair went on easily with a distribution wrap, tha hard part was trimming off the butts without cutting anything I didn't want cut. I didn't put too much thought into why I think it might work better, I was just trying something new. I think even with the bead head, the deer hair will add a certain amount of boyancy that could help swinging it as an emerger.

I think using the deer hair is a cool idea. Your buoyancy theory sounds pretty good too.

Thanks
