Trinity Report - The Hype and the Reality 17 Years, 6 Months ago
Fished the Trinity today. Previous reports have commented on how crowded the Trinity has been. Most have understated the reality. Wow. It is a weekday today, and there were a lot of people in a lot of areas of the river. I fished in the mid river above Weaverville this morning. While less crowded than Junction City downstream, there were still quite a few folks. The fish are either not in in this stretch, or they had a serious case of lock-jaw. I fished two of my favorite runs and did not touch a fish. Heard similar reports from others. Best I heard of was one fish in this area. After lunch I drove upstream to take a look at river restoration efforts. Lots of changes on some of the runs I frequent. I'll be curious to see how it impacts fishing. Stopped at the Steel Bridge access. Never been there. Didn't fish it, but there were quite a few trailers parked. Nice area. Headed West over the hill and down towards the North Fork. Slightly better reports there, but not red hot. Again, best I heard from anyone was one to a few fish. The hype of 20 fish days on the Trinity might be happening occasionally, but clearly is not the norm. There were a lot more folks in this area of the river. I'd suggest we establish a rock reservation system! I'm a little nervous what the weekend will bring tomorrow and Sunday.

I did finally stick a nice 6 pound 26" hen late this afternoon. Much to my surprise, it had Adipose! My first fish of the season, and it was a wild steelhead. Nice treat, and a great way to kick off the season. I released her and she promptly returned to the spot right where I hooked her.

I also stopped and paid my respects at Hud's Riffle. Pretty spot. Hud did great today in that run, all on Red Copper Johns and accompanied by a fine cigar. Here's to you partner!

Hey Phil,

I was hoping to make it up there to catch up with you and fish some but alas, the wildfires in Southern California dashed those hopes . Since the fires were controlled I have made a couple trips down there and have been busy coordinating our agencies emergency response program we have after disaster events like fires and floods. We are working with Cities and Counties down there to identify high risk areas for mudslides and debris flows from the burned areas that have potential to damage homes/improvements now facing this new threat. We will cost share with these entities on sandbags, K-rails, trash racks and debris basins to try to protect the properties at risk.

I am not surprised at the reports of all the people fishing up there and the fishing being modest to fair at best. I don't blame you for being concerned about the weekends crowds. Congrats on that wild fish today, I am sure that got the blood pumping well. I am sure that was a treat to get out and fish at Hud's riffle. Enjoy the rest of your trip and I look forward to the pictures when you can post some.

Best Wishes!

Bill

Hey Phil,

I heard the same thing Wednesday night from a buddy who went to our "secret spot". He just beat 4 guys there, and one stayed to fish near him anyhow. (I guess it's not so secret.) Yesterday there were 3 guys fishing around him.

Although in 2 days of fishing he did manage to land some, he decided to leave a day early. He sounded a bit down about the experience.

As for me, it's just a priviledge to be able to get up there, with or without the crowds. Besides, what else would I do with 2 weeks during autumn steelie season?

May your nets be full,
AB
